I've always hear of it as the "gen 1 miss glitch" or the "1/256 glitch", never the "99.6 glitch".

I'm not a programming expert, but I'm pretty sure it's 255, not 256. 256 would require an extra bit to store. The 256th possible roll is 0.

To elaborate a bit further, the game rolls a number between 0 and 255 and checks if it's less than the acciracy of the move. 100% accurate moves are set at 255/255.

But it checks if the number is *less than* as stated, as 255 is not less than 255, the move misses.

And we all know that if it's not 100% accurate, it's 50% accurate

Recent research has shown that isn’t the case, specifically on the first turn of battle. On that first turn, moves with 100 accuracy are legitimately perfectly accurate. After that, accuracy drops to 99.6

The fix for this glitch in Stadium was just running the check again if the attack would miss, but only once. Meaning you had a 1/65536 chance of missing.

I have such beloved memories of playing Blue back in the 90s and I love that even now in the 2020s I still regularly learn about these bizarre programming quirks and errors along with nonsensical glitches from Gen 1. Gen 1's inner crappiness is a goldmine of joy 😂

I actually like this glitch. Makes them near impossible to miss but any gen 1 miss I get or benefit from I treat in my mind/head cannon as anime style shenanigans. So I actually like this glitch (because it’s so rare)

Pokemon games were never coded particularly well we just played them so we could capture animals and make them fight. 😂

The same with moves that should always crit (for exemple slash on scither), it also had a 1/256 chance of not criting.

While this was fixed in Gen 2, those games have a similar glitch: moves that are supposed to have a guaranteed secondary effect like Mud-Slap and Icy Wind actually have a 99.6% chance of having the effect.

I actually kinda like Gen 1's Wrap. It's broken, but it's accurate to the real action I think. If you are wrapped by a snake, there's no way you can move. Imagine being wrapped/bound by Onix

That's similar to the accuracy of Wide Lens Population Bomb. Considering how it won me the game once when opponent missed it, i am thinking that it would be funny if all "100%" moves were changed to 99% accuracy instead. People would quit canceling the battle in hope for that 1% miss saving them.
I mean even in the anime pokemon can dodge moves that shouldn't miss.

99.6% is also my chance of flubbing my pickup line😭

Learned about this multiple times via MDB

I somehow STILL miss multiple times in a (semi) competitive battle. As tinge saying goes . . .

That's why we call it a gen 1 miss

Swift is the only move that doesn't have the glitch since it specifically doesn't get the check
