I think getting advice from someone who was 1500+ rating by the age of 10 is worthless. They hardly remember hitting 1200 themselves, let alone what it takes to get there.

It sounds like a joke but it's actually a good answer. Studying 20 moves of theory for your pet opening won't help you nearly as much as not hanging a piece on move 10.
