It's taught as an academic subject, not as if it were sunday school.

I'm an atheist, but religion has had a deep historical impact on human culture. Makes sense to require kids to take religion or ethics.

I’m an atheist that went to a catholic university and my religion classes were some of the best I ever took.

Religion class in my OH high school was and is not required but we studied all religions, including Hindu, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam…it was one of my favorite subjects. At the time it didn’t include field trips so my mother and I visited temples, churches, meeting halls around NE OH, we both learned a great deal.

I went to Catholic school and as such had mandatory religious classes but we frequently talked about other world religions as well 👀

It's very interesting how different different parts of Germany handle this topic, in our state we could choose if we wanted to have religion and if you took it you would go over other religions as well.

I also had religion class in school, and we talked a lot about other religions, a lot about history and what part it played in our society. It´s not like we studied the bible... I never had a teacher who said, that it was the only true religion. I´m not even religious and I liked this class, because it was a class, in which we could talk about philosophy, religious, politics etc.
But I had a great teacher, so I don´t know about other schools (sorry for my english if I made something wrong :) )

Where I'm from (a part of Germany), it's like having religion classes in elementary and the first part of middle school, where you learn about ALL/MOST of the religion we have, including islam, judaism, hinduism and so on. From the second part of middle school (7th grade) you can choose between religion classes and ethics/philosophy.
Also, for religion in elementary and first part of middle school, you can be freed from taking religion classes, but you have to take another classes (like English, German or any other class) for that time, as she mentioned in the video :)

I live in the Netherlands, religion is voluntary per school. So a school can require it as part of the curriculum, but if they do teach it they have to teach about the other major religions as well and also a few chapters of philosophy.

In the UK we study the 6 world religions in Primary School, and in Secondary, Christianity and another religion (Usually the second largest in the area)

I always loved my religion class! It incorporated history, this way both subjects stuck with you and it made the class more interesting!

In elementary you talk about the important bible stories (Moses, Jesus Birth etc) and later you talk about ethics (like social problems, suicide etc) and other religions

I think it's ridiculous to teach one religion without offering all of them. It would be nice to see more societies teach about religion solely from an academic perspective, as a basic, obligatory course.

In the uk we learn RS (religious studies) which gives an overview of all the major religions

I went to Catholic school for all of my life until college but my senior year of high school we were able to take aworld religions class as an elective. I wish they made that class a required part of the curriculum. I think learning about other cultures and faiths os the only way to eliminate bias and prejudice.

It's also important for young people to understand how the social services work in Germany. Most funding for elderly and disabled comes from church taxes, which, unfortunately, fewer and fewer young Germans are willing to pay.

In Ireland, if you go to a catholic school prayer and catholic education is required, however preparation for communion and confirmation isn’t done by those who aren’t catholic. In non religious schools religion class is learning about all religions and the differences

In Canada, religion isn't even required. It's also not taught even in Social Studies. I don't think Canada even has a program for it, we have a french learning program due us being a Bilingual country
