What is Pull-up and Pull-down resistor ?

The pull-up resistor pulls up the voltage of the digital pin to logic HIGH and it prevents it from the floating condition (when the pin is interfaced with a switch).
The pull-up resistors are often used with the open collector gates and open collector ICs and they are important part of the I2C protocol.

The pull-down resistor works exactly opposite to the pull-up resistor. It pulls down the voltage of the digital pin to logic LOW and prevents it from the floating condition.

While using these pull-up and pull-down resistor in any circuit, the selection of the proper value of the resistor is also very important.

thank you for including the calculations for min and max resistor sizes, that is missing from many videos and is a critical piece of information. You cheated by using a transistor switch with a known mA draw, now do it for a physical switch that would lead to a short circuit and sparks :-)

dont we consider VIL value of logic gate in case of Rp min calculation. if not, then why ? @ALLABOUTELECTRONICS

3:20... why input pin is equal to logic 0 when logic gate is connected parallel? Parallel means that everywhere is the same voltage so i dont understand how voltage isnt here.

Too low of pull up also can introduce problem of logic level when the system cannot source that much current. Also you will have Rdson from mosfet forming a voltage divider to the PU resistor.
