Assuming 100uA as in your example, you would use a 10K not a 40K.
You only want to drop 1V across the resistor, not 4.
Vcc - Vin / Iin. (5-4 / .0001)

Don't forget different values of current for sourcing vs sinking inputs.

This video needs a few million more views. Seriousy. Everyone else just says, pick a big one if you want to soft pull, and a small one for a hard pull. This gave us the reason, and the math, even though, as soon as you said it, I realized, I should have seen that before hand. But, you know, most people teach you these circuits with ideal circuits in mind, so I had never thought about the input making a voltage divider, because well, when most people teach you, they say that inputs take no current, or so little you can discount it.
While that is probably true most of the time, at least now I know how to properly pick a pull up/down resistor. You earned my subscription. I hope your channel does very well.

hello do i need pull resistor even if the signal input comes from another ic sending out clock signal...or just use the pull resistor when is a mechanical switch?

good tutorial man! but at 3:54, why is 3V and 2.5V combination an undefined state? Isn't this a logic high in TTL? or does it mean that induced voltage could vary rapidly and lead to 0.8-2.0V zone voltage?
