How To Temporarily Remove A Radiator For Decorating

Step 1: You Will Need
Old Rags
Bucket
Large Bowl
Screwdriver
Spanner
Step 2: Drain Water
Turn off both valves then unscrew the cap-nut that keeps the valve attached to the adaptor in the end of the radiator. Hold the bowl under the joint and open the bleed valve slowly to let the water drain out. Transfer the water from the bowl to the bucket, and continue doing this until no more water can be drained off.

Step 3: Lift Radiator from Brackets
Unscrew the cap-nut that keeps the other valve attached to the radiator, lift the radiator free from its wall brackets, and drain any remaining water into the bucket

If you have thermostatic radiator valves, or TRVs, make sure you cap them off at this point. Do this because TRVs open automatically as the room gets colder so could cause a leak if the radiator's not in place

Step 4: Replace Radiator
To replace the radiator, re-hang the radiator and tighten the cap-nuts on both valves. Last of all, bleed the air from the radiator. For this, see ""How To Bleed A Radiator"".

“All you need is a screwdriver and a spanner”

Video proceeds to show grips, pipe wrenches and blank caps 🤦🏻‍♂️.

Before lifting off, put some rolled up tissue in the valve stems. This helps to prevent you having to clear up the
black water which will come out. Once off, turn the bleed screw of and turn rad upside down.
The other way of doing it is to lift rad off quickly, put thumbs over the stems, then take outside and empty.
That's the quickest way as long as you have two people who know what they are doing

At 0:28 when saying to turn off the valves, the video appears to show someone opening the valve. Whassgoingon??

"Turn off both valves" - shouldn't that be a clockwise motion? This video appears to show an anticlockwise movement.

Whatever you do, don’t rely on the thermostatic valve closing completely when it’s cold, like what I did. Fortunately I was going to replace the carpet and underlay anyway :-)

Right- first of all the video shows a muppet OPENING a rad valve not closing it... secondly they don't show any notes of how many turns the valves take to close so the system could well be out of balance now and lastly no jointing compound being used so them unions may well leak....😏

You don't need to remove the rad, just slacken the nuts, then lift the rad of the brackets and hindge it down on the floor, when you have finished painting/ hanging your wallpaper just tilt it back on to the brackets, tighten the nuts and there you go, no need to remove

Better still, get hold of a set of Radclamps and Radwrench to get the rad off, no need to drain.

I fucking only watched the first 20 seconds, just loosened the bolts and tried to drain off the excess water, resulting in the bathroom being totally fucked
