Beginners, listen to his suggested practice times. I played for about 10 hours one and for a few days after learning all the basic cords and my fingers were on fire for two days

Note to self: For initial practice do 20 minutes a day, 4 days a week. Try morning and evening practice. Take breaks. Fingers close to fret, good placement. Have fun 🎉

I played violin for four years before I dropped it and picked up guitar two years later. I’m very grateful I still have those calluses at least somewhat, because practicing isn’t very painful for me

As an older beginner I really appreciate this advice you have certainly saved an aspiring player not only painful lessons but anxiety from impatient trying to hard. Chill and play use common sense and enjoy who knew? Thanks man.

These are great tips! Also, make sure the action on your guitar isn't too high. The action is the distance between the strings and the fretboard. If it's too high have someone at your local guitar shop lower it.

This is such comforting commentary. I'm getting back to guitar-playing/singing after decades away, and the first few days were awful. Part of it was the guitar I was using - I've since borrowed a better one from a friend and will shop when our stores open again - but, still, I couldn't practice longer than 30 seconds. I was so distraught. You are like having a friend while I practice. I'm now a donating subscriber to your channel and so appreciate all you do!

My husband also suggested lighter strings in the beginning...there are so many styles that help with pain and still give you an authentic sound. That, plus you're tips really helped me move forward with my guitar journey :-)

20 minutes a day, 4 days a week. That’s already my routine even before you said it! Coincidence!

Everytime I want to teach somebody a bit of guitar it‘s always the pain that frustrates them immediately. Maybe these tips will come in handy :D
Thank you again

Hi Justin & all
Thanks for the direction
As an old beginner
I start my practice with the tune up
Then move to the finger gym exercises between the 3rd & 12th fret
Strum a while on the 9 basic open chords
Ease your way into the practice routine
Take time out and have a cup of tea
Then move on
Twice a day
Take it easy
Thanks again for all your input time & efforts to make us all better guitar players
You are a legend 🌈✌🏼

I honestly don't have a schedule of practicing, like it's just so addicting to play I just don't want to stop, or whenever I see my guitar I just have to pick it up and start playing. man its gonna be hard to just practice for 20 minutes a day

Dude I'm so motivated I've been playing 3+ hours on average daily and I dont even notice the pain, but I did start with a classic guitar, so the strings are more forgiving.

Hello!

I'm on my second day of playing guitar using your lessons, I am loving them!

One thing I may suggest, I learned a trick in bodybuilding that helps with building up muscle (which is similar to how calluses on the hands and fingers build). It's called greasing the groove.

Basically what I did was play for 5-10 minutes at a time, multiple times throughout the entire day (helps that we are in quarantine that I have the time to do it). I'm on my second day and my fingers don't hurt at all, and the calluses are already forming.

“You’re learning guitar you don’t practice an hour a day your fingers will hurt, like real bad”.
Me: Who practiced 4 hours on my 8th day

After I stopped for 18 yrs for personal reasons. I grabbing someone’s guitar and started soloing and bleed all over the place!! Now at 48 I’m coming back. Quick brush through the basics build the callas back up and I’ll be in my way again. Taking a deferent oath musical then I use to.

I have C standard tuning on my aucustic guitar. C F A# D# G C You can also have a capo on the first fret and then tune your guitar to standard C. That makes it possible to play more without pain.

Sir, I have a lot of respect for you.
A good teacher is one who has real sense of love towards the subject and love towards his students. And you have love for both.
Lots of love!
