Hi Francis, thank you so much for that extremely thoughtful name check. I am not a prolific commenter on YouTube, but I always enjoy your videos, no matter the subject, therefore feel the need to let you know you are not talking to an empty Universe! I feel I can relate to you in many ways (including your worries and concerns) and especially your love of art, not to mention supplies! I think you are a versatile, talented artist and enjoy very much tagging along with you on you and your channel’s journey. I feel this has to be the most sensible, and well thought out video on Oil Pastels I have ever seen. Having watched you make your decision to go ahead with this new journey (thanks to your Mum for that), I just sat back and smiled, knowing I was in for some very enjoyable videos. I am no where close to even thinking about trying Oil Pastels, but it makes no difference, I simply enjoy watching your process. You are relatable, and have an understanding of people such as me who have a bad habit of buying things on a whim, then feeling guilty about not using, or not enjoying the medium. You are my rudder - I can simply allow you to steer me through the many pitfalls out there, and yet dive in when I am feel sure I have made a balanced decision. I wish you could stop me buying watercolours though, as I am doing this, then staring at a blank page and not trying, or even playing with them! 🙄 I think I need to find an ASA (art supplies anonymous group) to join. 😉Thank you again for that lovely name check, I was pleasantly taken aback. I look forward to your next video. Take care, stay safe, stay happy 👩‍🎨🖌🎨🥰

Fear of accidentially destroying a finished painting is what kept me from trying out this medium (well, that and time management😅), but the fixative seems to be a great solution. Looking forward to your next video; either one sounds entertaining 👍

I've been experimenting with Jaxon, Pentel and Talens Panda series - I can't tell you the level of dissatisfaction I've had with them regardless of what techniques I used- I almost gave up oil pastels completely. I eventually bought a box of Mungyo which are creamy like caran d'ache but not pricey and I can't tell you the difference it's made! All of a sudden my paintings/drawings are actually good! I plan to eventually replace the mangy with Caran d'ache as they get used up one by one. So I don't recommend the cheaper options if you are beginner unless you want lessons in frustration. As for my cheap boxes? I''ll just use them for 1 min poses and exploratory sketches to investigate colour relationships and composition before I use the better quality stuff

Great video, i know its an old video but if you did a landscape in oil pastels but wanted some finer branches would an oil pencil actually draw these or just scratch them into the pastel already laid down, ty

I have oil pastels paintings from the 80s and I’m thinking of framing them.

I had those 1980s cray-pas when I was a kid. I didn't even realize they were oil pastels, of course. Just thought they were fancy crayons. LOL!

You can save a lot of money by using Mungyo instead of Caran d'Ache. No open stock, but so comparable that I replace used up Mungyos with Cd'Ache.

If it's Senellier-buttery you want, buy Jaxon, melt them down and add baby oil yourself. Pour in tubes from aluminum foil and voilà: "Senellier" on the cheap. Also a great technique to create your own custom shades.

Note: Pentels don't melt well, so forget that.

What is the brand of the 'oil pastel pencils' you are using?

Oil pastels pencils?! Never heard of that! Soft pastels pencils, .yes. And oil based pencils, too. But oil pastels pencils?!.... Is that a thing!? I can't even imagine how is it possible to enclosed an oil pastel in a wooden barrel! Let alone how to sharpen them! Please, let me know the brand of those oil pastels pencils.
Another thing, the Sennelier fixative has a VERY strong smell and is necessary to use outside! I can't use it cause of the smell. The Spectrafix works wonders and is safe to use inside and no smell whatsoever. 😊
