What's Actually Hiding Under the Sands of Sahara

The Sahara, Earth's largest and most renowned desert, only surpassed in size by the ice-bound expanses of Antarctica. Contrary to our typical perception of deserts, this frigid continent doesn't align with the image of sun-scorched, arid wastelands that typify desert landscapes. When contemplating a desert, one envisions an unrelenting sun, meager precipitation, and an endless sea of sand.

Spanning an area comparable to half of Russia or the entirety of Brazil, the Sahara is a vast expanse of barren terrain. Buried beneath its sandy facade lie bountiful reserves of natural gas and petroleum. The desert boasts colossal sand dunes, soaring to heights of 160-180 meters, dwarfing even a 70-story skyscraper.

Yet, what lies beyond this desolate sandy veneer? Why the omnipresent sand? From where did it originate? Has the Sahara eternally embodied this dry, desolate character? Astonishingly, in the not-so-distant past, this immense region was teeming with life. However, a cataclysmic shift altered its fate.
