The squared entryway, fits the proportions of the rooms better than the archway.

I am confused. What about the damaged upper left side? The new trim didn't quite cover it and you didn't repair/replace/repaint the plaster. The white space on the dark green wall is rather obvious.

Did you check the garage & attic? A lot of times they were used as flooring in attic spaces or garage rafters.

Don't forget to look in the attic and basement, maybe the garage, for those doors, they may have been stored instead of gotten rid of. You *might* get lucky.

Quick note as a heritage architect - details matter, and so does being able to discern when details were added. In 100 years a heritage architect will very much appreciate you if include minute details that differentiate the original fabric from your sensitive alterations. This can be a date written on the timber, or a slightly more simple profile.

I had the same situation in my 1913 bungalow. Except the hardware was still in place. Finding the right doors has been a challenge. But removing the arch that had been put in place looks so much better.

Liked the arch! BUT it makes the room feel bigger with out it! Like how you might enjoy strawberry ice cream but you know you’d rather have chocolate chunk?? That kind of vibe

Transom window would look beautiful in that

I love arches but that one wasn’t it. The open space is just beautiful. Even with how expensive it is I’d save pup the money to one day have the pocket doors again.

Looks great! Hoping you'll be able to put pocket doors back in someday soon, those are so cool.

With that arch it made the place seem a bit cramped and now with the squared entryway it looks so opened up and makes the place seem bigger

It's always amazing the amount of work that this takes. My grandfather's house (from the late 1800s) had pocket doors. As both child and adult, I found them really interesting, especially when it cme to holding in heat during the winter. One could go from a relatively open floorplan to cozy causeways.

The arch was pretty, but I like to keep an old home as close to the original as possible

Just an idea but you can build those doors yourself.. half inch plywood with 1×4s to make whatever designs you want on the pocket door.... I built my own doors (they're plain) but with a router to cut down the edges you could make it look "original"

Well, don’t go to a salvage yard their markup is like 3 4 500% find people who are taking houses apart or maybe make some

Girl, that arch was ugly. Your work looks much better. It's beautiful!

If you can't do pocket doors, this was definitely the best option. It looks great and is true to the style of the home. That arch wasn't horrible, but it didn't fit the house.
