H1MIN: TIRPITZ SINKING

Показать описание
After many attempts to sink the Tirpitz, the end for the "Queen of the North" arrives with the RAF Lancasters of No. 617 and No. 9 Squadron RAF. Armed with massive bunker buster "Tallboy" bombs, the Tirpitz suffers damage that causes a magazine explosion and overturns the ship, causing approximately 1,000 sailors to be killed. By this point in WWII, the Tirpitz was not much of a threat in the northern atlantic as previous attempts to sink it had caused extensive damage. However it was a propaganda win for the allies and why one of the Lancasters carried a film crew documenting the final moments.

This video explains the power of these Tallboy bombs designed by Barnes Wallis of Dambusters fame, and the final blows to the powerful sister ship to the Bismarck.

If you are interested in this topic, I highly recommend the book: Sink the Tirpitz 1942-44 by Osprey Publishing

This is proof that you don’t need 10 pages to describe something very complex

Steel plates recovered from the Tirpitz are still used all over Norway on things like construction projects as temporary covers (like ones over ditches in a road) due to the excellent strength, durability and quality of the metals used.

Any chance you can do the loading mechanism of other battleships?

The Germans had smoke generators lining the hills around Tirpitz which usually worked well in obscuring the ship.

The morale on Tirpitz always intrigued me. You rarely have to fight but you are a huge target.

This bomb used to go through the sound barrier as it fell. Can't imagine being on the receiving end of one. Great videos!

The bomb Bay doors on the Lancaster's had to be removed because of the size of the bomb. The squadron was the famous 617 Sqn RAF "Dambusters" and this mission was one of three, the first two failing because of weather and smoke screens. The flight was incredibly long and one of the longest endurance flights in military history up until the Vietnam War. The Luftwaffe were also airborne when they raid was picked up on radar but they were directed in the wrong direction and it wasn't until after the raid had happened that a handful of German planes caught up to the Lancaster's.

Minor correction: the Tallboy and Grand Slam bombs were not designed as armor piercing, but as "earthquake" bombs, meant to bury themselves 50-100+ feet deep, then blow up and create a huge cavity which would collapse the foundations of what they landed near. Near misses were more damaging than direct hits.

The hardest part of successfully attacking Tirpitz was overcoming the massive defenses of its anchorage, not the strength of the ship.
Steep, narrow, twisting fjords combined with heavy nets made torpedo attack impossible and made dive bombing near lethally dangerous. Add in heavy shore based AA guns, very large smoke screen generators on shore AND heavy fighter cover it's no wonder the ship survived so many attacks.
Only when the Germans moved the ship to within range of Lancasters flying from Britain was such an attack able to be launched.

I like how this happened during the war but the city of Tromsø is rendered like this happened yesterday. Tromsø did not look like this during the war.

You know you're in trouble when the bombs they're dropping are blocking out the sun!

They were able to cut some of the men out with torches. Then the tide came in.
