Robbie, last night I had a hummingbird fly into my sliding glass door. It happens at least once every season, they get stunned, and get back up after a few seconds. I want this to be helpful for fellow hummer lovers; my 'yesterday' story. In my East Coast [South Carolina] habitat middle of Aug to end of Sept, I call "Hummingbird Wars" time.

Despite having several feeders and flowers in the yard some will guard and others will play zooming with each other through the backyard. Well yesterday, playing too hard, and a little fella *THUDDED* into the door like I'd never heard. Being scared to look out on the deck, I did anyway. He truly looked dead. Wings out, on the ground, head to the side, not moving.

I did what I always do: Kept dogs inside, texted husband so he wouldn't come inside that way & while not seeing him accidentally step on him, and then waited - NOT disturbing him. It must have taken 3 whole minutes for him to retract his wings and to get into the typical dazed, sit there for a minute position with head above heart, and then another 3 before he flew off.

I want this to be a comfort for those who think that the loudest *thud* in the world means death. I had a casualty (in 2014) but I believe it's because I didn't know about *stun-wait-fly* and then could have inadvertently stressed/harmed my little friend as I nurtured him for 9 days [outside, keeping him safe from predators but able to fly if he healed] only to have him pass away quietly. Had I left him alone...perhaps he would have survived. Not enough people talk about this.

Even though your trick makes perfect sense, I don't think it ever would have occurred to me.😉😄

Thanks!👍🏻

🤩🙏 thx for this video w/ this specific topic all on its own - great to know as I have 2 pumps that’re way too strong & keep emptying the reservoir!
Now I know what to do. Thx again, Robbie!

Our apt sits in a very efficient wind tunnel, and the up spout of water gets blown out of the basin - so, I used your soldering iron trick to burn a small hole in a small plastic shot glass, which we put onto an allen wrench and then dropped the long end of the allen wrench into the short glass tube on our pump - now most of the water hits the inside of the plastic shot glass and falls directly back into the basin, and hopefully - one day - the hummingbirds may notice the short end of the allen wrench as a potential perch. :-)

Perfect timing! Just yesterday I shortened the tube on one of my bird baths, but never thought about putting any holes in the tube to relax the water pressure. Thanks so much, Robbie!!!!

Good idea! I found nectar powder made from corn which is much healthier for them than table sugar. They love it!
