Southgate didn’t bring on Trent even when England was 4 goal up against Iran. As a Liverpool fan, I wish he left Trent rest instead of taking him for bench in world cup

It's not the selection so much as the tactics. We have a starting lineup that's quite capable of doing the job. Southgate has obviously instructed them to prioritise defence (not conceding) - don't overcommit to attacks. That won't change with TAA replacing Trippier. Indeed, in that context (a defensive mindset) Trippier is probably the better starter.

So drop Trippier ( whos pretty much top of every defensive metric in the premiership this season, as well as one of the top performers in the 2 games so far) simply because Arnold plays for Liverpool,

This is why it's disappointing England didn't bother to win on Friday. If they were 100% through, Southgate could have played the creative players against Wales, taken risks, started players like Maddison, Trent, Foden and seen what they could do, what they could bring and then said "ok, I was right about benching x or maybe I underestimated y" or "look, a different option for games going forward, a different system that works" and used it as a test to play around to find out how to get the best out of the players going into the later rounds. Now England are only 99% through but you never know, Wales could show up and score 6 so he won't take the risks.

Trent was fantastic in his first 2 full seasons but since the start of 20/21, he hasn't hit anywhere near that level again. Teams found out how frail he is defensively target him. Those defensive frailties were more evident in the 20/21 season. A lot of fans put this down to injuries at the back that season but that's an excuse and doesn't take away from the fact he was poor. He also had only 7 assists whilst having the 3rd most touches in the final third and 297 crosses.

In the first half of 21/22, he performed brilliantly in attack with 10 assists but still looked shaky at the back. Then we look at his performances in the second half of 21/22 and all of 22/23, hes one of England's worst performing players in that time. He's had numerous poor defensive displays and only has only 2 PL assists in 11 months, in that time, he's had over 300 crosses.

England can't be expected to cover for a player that struggles to defend but the fact he hasn't performed in attack lately, makes it an easy decision for Southgate.

Trippier has a goal involvement every 230mins in the PL since his return, Trent has one every 520mins, in that time.

Add all this to the fact Trippier has performed at a high level for England over the last 5 years and Trent has never performed well, it's completely understandable why he doesn't play.

I will play 343, this is the game walker needs to come back for action get himself ready for knockout games, so Trent should also play when you have 3 CB to covers him.

Trent's defensive frailties are overinflated. He is not that bad at defending but of course, the twitterverse has decided he is rubbish so it must be so. Is it the strongest part of his game? No. It never has been. But he is not part of the team that has won every single trophy at the club level as the starting RB because he he can't defend at all. But twitter have seen a few isolated clips of him and decided he's bad at defending all of the time.

Trippier was BAD this last game, going forward and defensively. He was no better than Trent would have been. His set pieces were bad. But Trent will never play, Gareth never trusted him before all this defense BS that's gone on in the last few months but Gareth doesn't know how to use players that play out of his very limited box and he won't play the creative players (see: Trent and Foden on the bench). Trent in that game on Friday would have passed the ball to all the players who were wide open across the field or into the box and would have opened the game so much.

Trent was defensively soild last season tbh, only martineli gave him problems last season.
