"close"... So what you're saying is Gerrard in an abysmal Liverpool team that he had on his back decided to remain loyal to his boyhood club.

The last person I'd take credibility advice off is Alex Crook. Has no real journalistic degree or qualification and just trots on radio talking absolute waffle. The real reason Liverpool fans are upset isn't due to him leaving but leaving on a free when other players like Rice and MacAllister extended their contracts to allow the club to attain a fee.

Captaincy isn’t something to be demanded during negotiations; it’s earned through years of exceptional performance, influence, leadership, and unwavering commitment to the team. At this point, those criteria haven’t been fully met. Additionally, the players should have a say in who represents them as captain. This feels like a case of "Mbappé-like" behavior. If making captaincy a contract demand is part of his terms, I wouldn’t mind letting him go.

From what I remember Gerrard was forced to stay due to the repercussions of what might happen to his family if he left.

The old head Reds (like me) were shocked when Keegan left, when Rush left, when Owen left, McManaman left. We, the fans, are still here. LFC is a very stable club, we can lose a whole squad and survive. LFC had 9 managers in the 30 years we didn't win the premiership, Man Utd have already had 9 managers in just 10 years. Let Trent go.

Gerrard 'Nearly' went to Chelsea because he wanted to win the league and thought he might have to leave Liverpool for that to be possible, something that Trent doesn't have to entertain considering he's won everything already.

Trent wants to go and live the lifestyle for a bit, play football with some of the highest profile players in the world, Bellingham, Mbappe, in a country with belter weather, race his car through winding spanish hillsides and eat paella neck sangria on the beach front of an evening, and after already winning the league and champions league not you nor I can't fault him for considering it.

It's not even close to the same thing.

Best of luck to the lad, thank you for everything you helped the club do.

There are huge differences, of course. Gerrard would have gone to Chelsea for a substantial fee - we all know Madrid are getting Trent for free in the summer. Not to mention that much as people were angry with Gerrard for considering leaving, it was far easier to understand why he'd want to go than Trent - yes, Liverpool had just won the UCL, but Gerrard knew better than anyone that we'd done so with a pretty poor team. Trent would be leaving a side that was much more likely to win major honours in the future. Not to mention the biggest difference of all; when push came to shove Stevie couldn't do it.

The closer comparison is McManaman (and to a lesser extent Owen because £8 million + a player we didn't want felt like Madrid got him cheaply), and his reputation amongst the fans suffered greatly from the manner of his leaving. If Trent signed a new contract and then went to Madrid in a year or two for a huge fee most fans would understand. And yes, in the McManaman case there was plenty of cause to also blame the club for mishandling negotiations. It's easy for Trent to say he'd have signed a new deal if offered one eighteen months ago, there's no way to verify that.

Funny, this. Remember 2 years ago when he was out of form and last season when Bradley was coming through. Some fans were alright with him leaving. Spare me this homegrown bs. Look at the case with Rashford. The moment he has another bad season, some fans will want him gone so he should do what is best for him, in this case, going to a bigger club, Madrid.

Close, but never went and cemented himself in the legends of Liverpool forever...

Alex Crook saying LFC fans have short memories is rich since United fans accused us for years of living in the past.. which ironically is what all United fans seem to be doing now 😂

Not sure of the relevance of Gerrard 'nearly' leaving the club.
He didn't, he stayed for his whole career and is idolised. Which is what Carragher said !
What is Cook on about ????

Yes, Gerrard almost left for Chelsea. But guess what? Firstly, no one knew until after. It wasn’t played out in the media. Secondly, Gerrard stayed even though he had every reason to leave. The Liverpool Gerrard played in is far, far different from the one Trent plays for that challenges for everything year in year out. He can’t say he can’t win trophies. And even if he chooses to move on, it’s HOW you leave. Leaving your boyhood club on a free transfer at the beginning of your prime years is legacy defining. And we, as Liverpool fans Alex CROOK, will remember. We don’t have short-term memories about Gerrard. He’s the one who had every right to leave at the time. You two pundits are just biased rival fans.

There were some under the table reasons as to why Gerrard didn't leave.... without those he probably would've gone.
