I still think Ymir chose Mikasa because Ymir was never strong enough to go against Fritz because of her strong devotion and love for him. But Mikasa went against Mikasa BECAUSE she loved and adored Eren. Mikasa set Ymir free by doing what Ymir wasnt able to do.
Ymir thought, that by staying by Fritz's side, he would eventually come to appreciate her. But he never did. So all the pain she endured was for nothing. He never loved her.
Mikasa on the other hand, as much as she was glued to Eren's hip, went against him for his and the world's sake. But that didn't change their mutual feelings. He always loved her. No matter what, just like she loved him unconditionally.

IMO Chapter 139 was 100% necessary, since it showed that genocide, as the greatest act of violence imaginable, cannot end the cycle of hatred. Without those panels, Eren might have been justified, and the ending to such a brilliant anti-war story cannot be that genocide will solve everything. The only way to end the violence is to leave the forest — if you burn it down, it’ll just regrow

Literally Armin to Eren. "What we fight, we become. Fire with fire. Abandon your humanity." As Eren proceeds to save the whole island everyone shifts. Erens struggle is real but he's doing what he has to do to save the people he cares about. The people on the island had they're memories robbed for over a century while the mainland keeps the rest of them in camps. He had to end the cycle and still didn't take their freedom away to fight against him. King Fritz warning was legit and Erens is just backing it up. Can we really call Eren the bad guy? - What else could he really have done.. there's a whole continent of people that want your whole island and race dead. They keep the rest of your people in camps on the continent so they can pluck the best child soldiers so they can go and kill you. Was he gonna talk it out lol? Nooo. Enough was enough. Eren figured if I can't end the cycle of hatred I guess I can just get rid of anyone else that wants to kill us simply for being born into this world. " Anyone who who try to take my freedom away, I have no problem taking yours."
