If you’re looking for a mountain bike, and you intend to ride off road, then the cheapest mountain bike at Walmart is very dangerous. For use on the street, it’s probably fine if you just using it to go to school and back or go to work and back, but if you want to do anything extreme on a Walmart bike, then you need something that’s a lot sturdier. The good news is that Walmart also sells more robust higher quality bikes foe a higher price. So the question is why is the cheapest bike at Walmart bad? and the answer is because they had to make it at a very low price point, so everything on it is not very sturdy. Actually that exact frame (same as a Trail Runner) is virtually indestructible high tensile steel and is the only thing that has a lifetime warranty on the bike. We rebuilt one of these things with a threadless headtube, a Suntour XCM fork, double wall wheels with 2.35 tires, a DNM rear suspension shock, Megura hydraulic V-brakes (totally legit), a Shimano Hollowtech 2 BB, IXF crankset with a 30t Wolf Tooth 1X chainring and a 9 speed Microshift groupset with a cluched deraileur. We send that thing and it goes hard! lol It's heavy but it seems to handle anything my older kids can throw at it. We did the build for sentimental reasons as it was a gift from a special person from the past and we just couldn't throw it away.

My 2010 specialized Rock hopper would out last a Walmart anyday. Bought it in 2012. And 13 years later it still going strong.
