I’m fairly sure you just did a zoom climb (transferred forward speed into a climb rate). To properly test max cruise altitude, you need to climb with max. climb thrust set and target IAS to the max rate of climb speed. As you gain altitude the ROC (rate of climb) will gradually reduce to zero. The altitude that occurs at is your maximum altitude. For certification it actually occurs when the ROC drops to 500fpm, to give a bit of an altitude buffer.
