ABOUT ME:
Hey friends, I’m Dara. I’ve been in the marketing biz for over 6 years. I’ve worked in-house for a travel startup, launched several e-commerce brands, and worked agency-side on creative & paid social teams. Before that I dreamed of being a life-long humanitarian: I started my career abroad (lived in West Africa, India, AND Egypt!) and came back to my sort-of native New York City where I started (and flunked) my own business. Now I’m a Director of Paid Social at a fully-remote advertising agency. I’m probably living in an Airbnb right now :)

THIS VIDEO IS ABOUT
snapchat ads, snapchat ads creative, snapchat advertising 2021, snapchat advertising 2021, snapchat ads review, ads on snapchat, snapchat ads vs facebook ads, snapchat ads e-commerce, snapchat ads shopify, should i advertise on snapchat, why snapchat ads

This channel is for anyone who wished they had a friend who could teach them Facebook Ads. I’ll show you the ropes, give tips & tricks, and share my favorite “blueprints” for success. Have a Facebook Ads question? ASK ME! Maybe I’ll even make a video for it...

I recently changed from being a software engineer to media buyer and really am enjoying it so far! I feel like with work from home both software and media buying has become quite demanding in terms of the amount of time that you have to give to it.

Hi Dara! Great video, from my side I would add:
1. Constant learning - this is not a job for you if you don't like to consume tons of knowledge. As a media buyer, there is always a new strategy to learn, new ad platform emerging, new competitor strategy to analyze
2. Throwing media buyers under the bus - oh lawd, how many times media buyers were blamed for drop in product sales etc. We are first to blame, last to be thanked haha
3. Crunching numbers - if you prefer Word over Excel I don't think this career is for you ;)
4. High moral standards - this may be controversial but in general, working inside agency, you have limited say in what clients you work for. I have worked for companies that are clearly negatively impacting current climate (automotive, fast-food chains). I can see how this can be a problem for some people and for me, I am lucky to work on a client side now in a company that has a mission that I agree with personally.

This is the second one of your videos I’ve watched and I couldn’t agree more with each and every one of your points. I genuinely feel like giving up even though I have a genuine passion for marketing and I’ve studied it in University, tested new techniques and creatives continuously for years and the pressure is immense. Many business owners have a hard time understanding that the ads are a reflection of their business because they’ve been sucked into the “MLM” side..

I really love this field bcz not everyone can do it and It is challenging. I always wanted to be in a field where every new day brings new challenges so, my primary goal was not money. I left my job as a mechanical engineer on my first day and shifted to this field.

40+ years in the media business and I still love buying. Sorry you chose the wrong profession, but perhaps just because you can't do it it doesn't mean no one should do it.

ive been on the buying, publishing and client side and i have to say each view has their benefits/challenges. I think buying gives you the best environment to get creative and test different hypothesis. It does consume your time if you are dealing with multiple platforms and pacing/targets becomes an issue. My out was that i would blame creative availability but if that's in your silo, then you definitely have additional pressure. Keep up the great content dara!

Made a short overview of the video for anyone interested:
fav quote:
"the main function of paid social advertising is to add fuel to the fire: it will work really well for you if you have: 1.product market fit, 2. a solid retention plan, 3. a solid website conversion rate...or... It's going to highlight a lot of problems"
Overview:
1.Dont do it because it seems easy, The technicalities might be easy, but marketing itself is not easy. It requires a lot of research. (especially in the light of recent privacy issues)
2.Don't do it for the glory, everything is going to be your fault.
3.Dont do it for the flexibility, it will consume your life, you will be on call all the time
4.Don't do it for the money, the best media buyers have an obsessivity and passion about marketing, not about money.

Nice to have you back, Dara!
The recent IOS14 changes have definitely hit hard and it seems there is no solution in sight.

Have you also tried the Zapier hack with sending offline purchases to facebook, to feed the algorithms. We've had decent success with it, you should give it a try at Thesis, if you already haven't ;)

Hi Dara!
I currently am a intern of a media agency, and I’ve been considering whether it is a suitable career for me in the future or not.
Thank you for offering such practical points that I could refer to🥰

Thank you for opening up and sharing these valuable insights. I love your content! BTW, I went from being a coordinator to Sr. Manager in a few years after moving from a foreign country to the US. So being a media buyer has been a blessing for me!

Happy to have you back, Dara! Thank you for giving us the full picture and being real with us. I would love to hear more about how to set expectations with clients. As I vet my first round of prospects, I find that most of them think FB is just this immediate revenue machine. They expect results on day one and demand guarantees. On top of that, their starting budget is so low that getting them results quickly would be a miracle to begin with. I've declined to work with these types even though I'm dying for case studies (I've been applying to agencies and most don't bother with even a screening call without case studies) but I'm starting to feel stuck.

I want to join an agency and media buying is a career path I've committed to, but I'm missing critical hands-on experience and am so incredibly frustrated that I can't seem to close the gap no matter how much I learn or how hard I try. Any advice you have would mean the world to me

To be honest I started it because of the money, but stayed because I fell in love with it 😁 So good to have you back ⭐️⭐️⭐️

This is really interesting looking at it from Marketing CEOs perspective, because Marketing can go bad on any level inside the funnel, but problems starts at the offer, then the ads, then the media buying, then the landing page.

Went through the same exodus as you, good timing😂 feel the same way about running an Ecom brand, everyone sees at as a get rich quick scheme, they don’t see the long nights, cash flow squeezes, insane amounts of stress, etc. With great reward comes a fuck load of work!

Love the video, but I think it’s important to distinguish between agency side media buying and inhouse media buying. Your points are definitely true for the former, not so much for the latter
