20 Great Roses for Containers

Enjoy roses in a grower's pot or decorative container on your patio or out in the garden! Here's a selection of compact (mainly) roses up to around 4ft height with regular pruning. There are literally thousands of roses you could choose to grow in pots, but I've selected these for their range of colors, bloom forms, fragrance and other special qualities. Definitely feel encouraged to add your own pics of roses you've enjoyed growing in pots instead of planting right in the ground.

I do have about 20 + Roses in big Containers, since I rent, I’d take my Roses wherever I move to, and they are doing FABULOUS. I have: Larger Than Life Roses, Simplicity Volet, Don Juan, Mr. Lincoln, Lagerfeld, JFKennedy, Life Of The Party, Givenchy, Queen Elizabeth, Savannah, Kiss Me Kate, Earth Angel and 3 others I don’t remember now. I live in zone 8

Just broke out my container roses from the back of the garage. They are all budding out: 3 Perle D'or, 3 Bliss Parfuma, an At Last and an Enfant de France. Batting 100%. I watered them all just a bit at the beginning of each month. And all of my roses in the ground made it. This is the first time for me that every single rose came through. Whoo hoo!

Accidentally did a thumbs down and reversed it immediately but I think the error was "shared" with you. I love this video!

Excellent, now I need at least half of them! Haha. I do have Lady Emma Hamilton in a pot, and it works ver well for me: so beautiful and an addictive fragrance! Harlow Carr works well in a pot too

I grew a floribunda called "Lagerfeld" in a container when I lived in Portland and it did really well. As I recall, it had a compact growth habit with silvery lavender petals and a mild fragrance.

I had about 20 varieties in containers for 7 years and lost them to power outage in early January for 5 days in -18 temperatures in Saint Louis MO. I re entered into about another 20 varieties in containers again this year. I have not had a single variety I could not grow well in a container however some grow through the bottom faster than others. I am a firm believer in things to be easy and cheap. As a contractor the one thing in high supply and free was 5 gallon buckets. My easy to follow set up is as follows:
Put about 4 quarter inch holes in the bottom of the container. In bottom 1/3 of container do a 50/50 mixture of peat moss and perlite. Wet throughly and put bottom of a bare root rose so the knot is just above the top of container. Fill in rest of container with miracle grow tree and shrub soil or equivalent. Top with cheap fast and slow release rose fertilizer if you want but not necessary if you are able to frequently monitor. Put that container in another 5 gallon bucket and will self water if desired. Drill a few horizontal holes through both containers about an inch or so above the bottom of the soil container to prevent overwatering in rain.
My favorite varieties this year are tropical lighting for the aesthetic look of its glossy leaves and beautiful new growth red coloration continuously is very pleasing even without buds. JFK does vary well in containers with very nice multiple buds stems and plenty of vase opportunities without cutting down to much of a container bush. Ebb tides and pretty much any grandiflora varieties but I like those for the color comparison to most of my others and very pleasant aroma. KOKo LOCO is a new to me trial I am excited to try after finally finding two in a Home Depot I ordered 4 plants bare root from Spring Hill at higher prices online twice and all 4 arrived green canes but roots dry and not as one ever grew in a container but trying two that were doing well as an in store purchase and putting next to two ginger snap varieties I am also new to but seem to be growing well also.

I have a Belinda’s Dream in a 21” pot that I got last yr. I’m in Tx, zone 8a, and she over wintered in our garage when we had cold snaps. She’s done really well, and I just pruned her along with my other roses and applied horticultural oil to all. I have two more 21” pots that I’m planning on putting more rose standards in very soon so this video was extremely helpful! 🥰🌹

I have an Anne Boylin David Austin rose that is really nice. It is in the ground, but is very small and compact. I think it would be great in a container. I buried my two container roses in the ground behind a large planter last winter. They did well. I just buried the pot to the level the soil would be if it was in the ground.

Hey Jason, thanks for all you do in helping us with our Rose's, I hate to admit this but I have over 30 in containers and looking to add more, but my favorite so far are Mr. Lincoln, double delight and fragrant cloud. It's a hobby that I hope to keep growing, thanks again for your time, helping me with my issues and problems keep the videos coming, . And would love to share some pictures of my Rose's with you and your channel.

Thanks again
Kevin W.

The best rose I have ever grown = Margaret Merrill. Large white flowers, full of petals, amazing fragrance, disease resistant, repeat flowering. Long flowering period. Joy!

Thank you for another fabulous video! I have several DA roses in pots, because I am in zone 4a; I am lucky enough to have an above-ground root cellar where I put them for the winter. In my pots I have Abraham Darby, Heritage, St Swithun, Tess of the D'Urbevilles, Othello, Bathsheba, Wollerton Old Hall (big pot). They are all in 21 inch pots (except the Old Hall, who is in a half barrel) and they do really well! The real reason I am commenting though is that I was lucky enough to pick up a Jalbert Dragon Heart (or Dragon Blood - I can never remember, since I lost the label and it isn't anywhere on the internet, not even Help Me Find)

The Dragon Heart is an outstanding container rose: very floriferous, never stops blooming, gorgeous flowers and foliage. The only downside is no fragrance :(

Here it is - and now I have to go and re-watch your video of the Summerland garden, because it is mentioned there :)
Shoot! Can't copy a picture in the comments!
