I have dedicated this year to taking an intellectual deep dive into the philosophy and religion of Greco-Roman antiquity so this series is a godsend for me! Many thanks for putting this online to whomever is behind Academy of Ideas!

Great video. I am from India and I see many myths in my country and this always makes me think about the reality. Great to know how western people think about this universe.

Jung made me aware that humanity, as well as every individual, began life immersed entirely in unconscious thought (dreamlike, mystical, personifying objects with spirit), and gradually grew out of that and into full conscious awareness. I believe through the pre-socratics and the classical philosophers of Greece we can witness this change. It is quite literally the switch from mythology and religion to rationality, logic and science. But unfortunately we've thrown out the baby with the bathwater, and most modern people dismiss and ridicule ancient thought as primitive and superstitious. In fact it shows us the way the unconscious (our source) functions.

I think that there is another reason why we should study the Presocratics. I think that even if the western world has been heavily influenced by Plato and Aristotle up to the 20th century at least, modern science, especially the one linked to quantum reality, but also modern art, has never stopped stressing how the ideas of these 2 philosophers have actually led human consciousness in the wrong direction. The Presocratics are much closer to the way a modern scientists and artists think, devoid of idealistic and deterministic ways of explaining reality instead of observing it; justifying, instead of understanding.

11 yrs since this has come out & I'm using it to study for a University Course Mid-term! Thank you for doing such a great job, it's funny, but I think my prof even uses your videos, because my course follows the exact lecture pattern as your videos are in.

I'm currently reading a presocratic book, but the content is sometimes very abstract. Your videos help to understand the book better, thanks! Greetings from the Netherlands

Great lectures! Regarding the it vs thou, which is brilliant and important to understand the differences between modern and ancient man - I would like to add that there still seems to remain some type of primitive attitude among certain "modern" people where they don't blame themselves, nor a stone spirit for tripping upon a stone, but either project the fault upon another person in their close relation, a certain group of people or society as a whole. It is as if they still do not comprehend the difference between the personal and external, or man-made and metaphysical outer world.
