FreeBSD 13.2

In this episode of the CyberGizmo I am taking an in depth look at FreeBSD 13.2 Release. Talking about some the of the major changes to the release of this UNIX-like operating system. The benchmark section, RAMSpeed was unable to be compiled because it is not supported on FreeBSD, also I had to substitute Posix-AIO for linix-aio, so the fio benchmarks were split by OpenBenchmarking since the parameters are not the same.

I love these reviews. Very informative, always practical. Great work DJ Ware!
New Fedora is coming out in 6 days. Hope you find the time to cover that one as well.

tbh the first time I clicked on this channel I was thinking about topics on 'DJ Softwares' but I discovered a whole new world. Keep up with these amazing contents!

Until today, I may have seen the Unix aphorism, but didn't register it in my head. But hearing it, flat out: Unix - Live Free or Die, man that's it in a nutshell.

Just upgraded from 13.1 to 13.2. Was quite straight forward.

I'm using FreeBSD, since release 12.0, it boots from (Open)ZFS. I use it in a Virtualbox VM and in my backup server. That 20 year old server has a Pentium 4 HT (3.0GHz); 1.5GB DDR (400MHz) and it has 2 datapools: zroot on 2 IDE HDDs (3.5"; 250+320GB) and dpool on 2 SATA-1 HDDs (2.5"; 320+320GB). The max transfer-speed (send/ssh receive) is ~22MB/sec, caused by a ~95% load on one of the two CPU threads. It is used for ~1 hour/week for the backup.
First I will try out the upgrade from 13.1 to 13.2 in my VM and afterwards I move to the Pentium.

Hey DJ Ware, I was wondering if you could also cover OpenBSD 7.3 as there has been a new release on their side as well

I'm still a dummy with all that is Unix, so I'll run GhostBSD until I wrap my head around everything.

Well... I waited untill 2016, to switch fully from Win to Linux. I started learning Linux really slowly, starting back in 1995. Because I could not find a pirated copy of System-V 😁 Yes true, I was stupid enough to think it was possible for my 486dx2-66 that I had back then.... Lack of better, I started to learn Linux out of lack of System-V. Hehe.

But I stuck with Linux, have tried like the first 50 distro's. But as I knew Win better and Linux were not ready to replace Win 100 percent, for my personal computing needs. Then I was not ready to jump fully on Linux untill 2016. Win7 EOL was announced, and I switched. Learned the last bits of pieces I needed to, and since I have been on Linux.

Next phase, is to learn BSD now. I also need to learn the older OSX 10.6 and 10.8 as much as I can. For that I have gotten old 2009/2011 Mac's. And then FreeBSD. Once I learn BSD enough, my switch will be from Linux to BSD.

And the cycle will become complete, for when I first logged onto the Vax server at school, using serial terminals. The downside, is that I have forgotten most Win stuff now. But I can still use Ms Dos 6.22 OS as if it was 1993. I also use Amiga ans C64 from time to time.

Unix and Unix Like are the best for my needs however... Gaming you might ask? Well... I have consoles under my TV. 😁

are 50% or more (i'll take 25% even) of the devs now running it on hardware, or are they still working on it via macOS and virtualisation?

to scroll in freebsd shell, press scroll lock, then you can scroll with the arrow keys. Press scroll lock again to disable it.

Are there any addition of NIC drivers? A big issue of freebsd is lack off support for non Intel or mellanox NICs. Pfsense is my main use of fbsd.

I would love to see a video an what we can do with bsd or even better net bsd or openbsd...
Also to show us chimera linux which is freebsd userland and linux kernel or adelie linux compared to chimera and alpine or tinycore linux and void and last but not least how is slitaz linux possible...
P.s of course a venom linux and how it compiles and works would be fine too

There's no third-party utility that would tell us the most accurate amount of memory used except for native top for the BSDs. Simply because other than top no utilities take into consideration the concept of "wired" memory in case of FreeBSD which also has reserved and other types of memory like in Linux but not many other OSs have additional the concept of "wired" memory. So what we saw here it's a bit misleading on cold boot.

I would like to use BSD but there are 4 applications that I use on a daily bases that I can not get them to work on BSD, Streamio, Calibre, Brother Print drivers, and Scribus. BSD too restrictive but it is quick and agile.

the .local is no longer required. At least it wasn't on my install. I'm not sure what problems it may cause without it, but the system still boots and everything I use works properly.

"Got to scroll all the way down to select the U.S." Lol.
What's that sound? Why, it's the sound of the rest of the world cheering. ;-)

Afaik the DEs are independent from FreeBSD as they are so called port and get updated in different cycles

i probably try any bsd distribution in the future, thing's is linux is gaining a momentum and striving as alternate os, the development is rapid, a lot of interesting project happen eg. pipewire, wayland etc, i just didn't found any reason yet to try bsd, maybe if i really want a stable and minimal system, but for now not yet.
