How countries around the world are beating sea level rise

Our planet is warming, ice sheets are melting, and oceans are rising at an alarming rate. Around the world, city dwellers are scrambling to stay afloat – by raising walls and buildings, rewilding land, and relocating to higher grounds. What are the most promising solutions, and are they coming fast enough to waterproof the future?

We're destroying our environment at an alarming rate. But it doesn't need to be this way. Planet A explores the shift towards an eco-friendly world — and challenges our ideas about what dealing with climate change means. We look at the big and the small: What we can do and how the system needs to change. We'll take a truly global look at how to get us out of this mess.

Is sea level rise a concern where you live?

Thank you for this important and eye-opening video.

I’m a 14-year-old from South Korea, and I’ve been following your videos closely—they’re always informative and thought-provoking. I used auto-translated subtitles to help me understand this one, and it was very educational!

Sea level rise is a serious global issue. In South Korea, coastal areas like Busan and many islands are already experiencing its effects. We’re building sea walls and flood prevention structures, but I’ve also seen how these constructions can harm the environment and damage various natural landscapes. Watching this video reminded me that sea level rise is not just a scientific problem, but also a threat to our natural beauty, communities, and way of life.

I was especially interested in the different adaptation strategies shown, such as building on stilts or creating floating structures. But even these solutions sometimes come with environmental costs, which need to be carefully considered. That’s why global cooperation and immediate action are so important—not only to adapt but also to slow down global warming itself.

Also, I’d love to see a future video about hydrogen energy. It’s a growing topic in Korea, and I’m curious to learn how practical it really is, what the main challenges are, what steps we need to take, and what benefits it can bring.

Thanks again for sharing such valuable knowledge with the world. I’m really looking forward to your next video!

The more pressing issue is sinking cities, not because of sea level rise but because the overuse of underground water. Most of the mentioned examples in the videos is the result of that instead of few mm sea water rising

Thank you for creating this.

It surprises me that countries do not tax on items that generate carbon to pay for the additional defences that need to be put in place.

Considering the cost of any flooding prevention, you might as well just relocate everyone. Anything in buildings that could be toxic must be removed....

The wildcard of sea level rise is if global warming changes ocean currents which could slow down sea level rise in some locations, but speed it up in other areas as changing ocean currents pile up water against the shore.

This video decreased my estimation of how bad climate change will be

Really informative and eye opening video. In Bangladesh, the sea level rise has been a crucial concern since the country is a low lying land and a huge amount of population leave in the coastal regions. Though, the level of sea level rise is not seen immediately, its impact is clearly visible. The amount of saline water, cyclone occurred tidal surges have increased nowadays. Fortunately, the mangrove forest on the south-west coast is saving the region from being wiped away from the map.

Sea water need to go somewhere right? So, if you build sea dykes the water will go to flood your neighbouring countries.

I live in Manila Philippines as we also have a bay area in threat of sea level rise. Philippines also has a long coastline and there are many livelihoods living around it. I just wish there is a technology where we can radiate heat to outer space in a massive scale or harness them for neutrality.

I'm in Wisconsin, USA, along the southwest shores of Michigami (meaning “big water” in Anishinaabemowin). I've been telling people that we are *ground zero* for climate migration. Our area is fairly climate stable and the Great Lakes are one of the largest sources of fresh water in the world. Fortunately, about 2/3 of the worlds population lives south of Siberia which, unless I'm very mistaken, is basically empty. That's why I'm always perplexed when people complain about immigration in the USA, hardly anyone lives out west ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ More people live in the tiny state of Massachusetts than in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, and both the Dakotas *combined*

Reversing global warming comes as the best solution to nearly every human-made problem. So, i think we need to fight global warming on a war footing.

Summary. All the ideas are only temporary solutions. Practical solutions have not been thought of yet.

This is going to be bigger and bigger problem, for coastal cities and whole island countries

I am almost 90. Born and raised in Florida. Never a problem with sea level rise.
