It’s one of the great unknown stories of the war and it’s all true. In this special report, Mike Carlton travels to the last resting place of Australia’s bravest warship - the HMAS Perth. During World War II, it was the last line of defense against the massive Japanese invasion fleet. The ship was struck by two torpedoes and sank in the early hours of March 1, 1942. 347 personnel were killed when the Perth sank. This story originally aired in 2012.

Would like Channel 7 to research the loss of the 1000 plus POWs on The Montevideo Maru which was sunk off Luzon, Phillipines. 1942 it’s a story that not many know about.

I think Yarra was braver, a corvette against three Japanese cruisers and destroyers in broad daylight.

Will you please stop calling it THE HMAS PERTH, it is simply HMAS PERTH, not THE HIS MAJESTYS’s SHIP PERTH. Clunking syntax.
