Is this BIG YouTube Update BAD for SMALL CHANNELS?

Small channels always think that YouTube is against them and, for some, this new update may feel like a fresh kick in the teeth. But is it, and what else could YouTube do to tackle the problems it's trying to fix?

I’d honestly make the opposite argument. Seeing a channel with good content and low sub counts actually encourages me to support the creator and I’ll most the time go out of my way to show off smaller channels I find to my friends because you feel early to the party.

I can honestly say that I rarely look at a channel's subscriber count when watching a video. If I like the video & they have more content on their channel like it, I'll subscribe, too. The great irony is YouTube forces you to hide the dislike, and now forces you to UNHIDE the subscriber number.

I have subscribed to channels with 0 subs to give them the boost that yes they can make it if they try. Some have gone on to many more subscribers and others just give up. You have to enjoy putting out new videos constantly to succeed on YT.

Even though I know some people would hide their subscriber counts as to not see their counts grow or shrink, I think not allowing it anymore would prevent any impersonators from thriving off the simple usage of trying to look like another huge YouTuber. Don’t worry yall, everyone’s channels will success when the effort and patience are put in, as well as the other stuff needed when making content

I think having a subscriber count is a useful way to track your own channel's growth. It's a summary of the success so far. Some of my videos take off and do super well, others don't do as well and it's hard to see why that happens, but the subscriber count acts an an overall number that shows me how we're doing in an aggregate sense. I appreciate this view comes from someone relatively successful in his niche, so it may well be very different for others.

i think you should be given the option to hide it past a certain count. There are better ways they could do this like verifying after a certain amount of views.

i think, as a small youtubers, we are in a loop. You have less people watching and liking your content, therefore youtube algorithm won't pick it up to promote it, which means, not many NEW people will discover it. That's why it's always important to be able to promote your videos and your channel outside youtube as well.
We should be transparent and Honest. There is no SHAME in having a SMALL subscriber count. Having passion to what we do is the most important thing.
Anyways, just my humble opinion.

It depends on what the YouTuber wants to do as it is ultimately their decision, (prior to this change) but I think it is best to show the sub count. I personally like to see channels grow. If you are reading this comment, don't worry we will all reach our goals. You can make it as a content creator! The mighty oak started as a seed. This is a reminder to never give up.

At the time of writing this comment I am a small YT channel with a small subscriber count - At the beginning of my journey I was worried about this (A LOT) but now, after watching your video's I've realized it just a number. Yes there are milestones I need to reach in order to move my channel forward but they will come in time. Right now Im enjoying the process and am trying to improve myself in every video I create - I'm also proud of the fact that I had the courage to start a channel. Onwards and upwards.

Depend. In some country, they care about subs count. If you had small amount of subscribers then they won't click. They always think that big channel is the only worth to watch. That is totally wrong, I saw so many channel with bad content but managed to get subscribers through giveaways

I understand some people may be mad about this update. As a small youtuber, I considered hiding my count. BUT I definitely think there are people out there that WANT to support smaller youtubers, and see you grow! If someone is making good content and I like some of their videos and their channel, I'm gonna subscribe no matter the amount of subscribers they have. I do think it helps to have more subscribers because other people have "tested the waters(content)" before you, but we all have to start somewhere. I also see where YouTube comes from with the impersonators and you makes some really good suggestions in this video to help with those problems as well. Great video! I didn't know about this update till I clicked, so you helped keep me updated!

I've never subscribed to a channel with their subscriber count hidden, but I've subbed to plenty below 1000 public subscribers.

I understand why they would hide it but sometimes it negatively affects channel growth. so it seems cyclical. I leave mine public because I want my subscribers to see that although the subscriber count is small, there's growth.

Knowing that this update is happening soon, I went ahead and un-hid my subscriber count. Everyone has different reasons for hiding or not hiding their subscriber count - please don't judge or assume anything. I love how in this video it was stated that you are not defined by the number of subscribers you have. Thank you for supporting small channels.

I've also felt hidden subscriber counts were a bit more suspicious for some reason. I like to see channels grow. I also saw this early thanks to VidIQ Max. 😉

Thanks to VidIQ MAX, I got to watch this early!!! I have never subscribed to a channel with a hidden subscriber count because I always wonder why it's hidden. It seems a bit sketchy to me. I do, however, watch videos of smaller channels and I'm happy to subscribe and be a part of their journey. There are some EXCELLENT channels that are just starting out and have great content.
