The Fascinating Transformational Power of Swimming!

Swimming and other forms of aquatic movement are not only excellent forms of cardiovascular exercise and strength development, but also incredible catalysts for mental and emotional health changes. Though not all of these changes are well understood, they are still well documented. It is possible that these changes may have something to do with an innate human affinity for the water. A biological theory known as the "aquatic ape theory" or the "waterside hypothesis" has long been espoused by some in the academic community as a potential explanation for not only human affinity for coastal communities and water, but also as an explanation for certain biological traits seen in humans and other aquatic mammals, but not seen in the other great apes.

When i turned 50 I turned to swimming to keep moving after rheumatoid arthritis began to take its toll on my regular weights and martial arts routine. Swimming in ice cold water or the ocean in the winter has improved my health & overall joint pain immensely. Swimming can also be a great zen gateway for learning to meditate as it can focus your breathing when that ice cold burn hits you during the swim.

I had basically no visible muscle through middle school, despite being one of the top in my grade for cross country. Then, in 7th grade, I join a winter swimming team with the high school. I knew so little about competitive swimming they basically have to teach me how to swim all over again. I wasn't going too well, and almost quit in the first 4 or so weeks. But then, I started to get the form right on stuff. Then I had rapid, daily improvement. I went from not even being able to do the butterfly to being able to do two laps consecutively in just a week. Needless to say, I go the most improved award, and when I went back to running, everyone immediately brought up how I was kinda jacked, which I hadn't really noticed. Swimming does a lot, so if any of you have spare time in the summer or winter, join a swim team or club. I could deadlift 200 at 13 with no prior attempts, all because of good ol' winter swimming. Though the water was like, 68 degrees F because the water heater was always half broken...

That had so much info in less than 10 mins. Plus, it's making me want to look for a nearby pool and schedule swimming into my routine. Good job mate.

I was born and raised on an island. Needless to say, me and my cousins were always at the beach, swimming even in treacherous waves and running in sand. We were all naturally ripped. We didn’t even try to be. Just this lifestyle made us like that. Now, I live in a big international city, I gained a ton of weight, and I’m struggling to lose it.

The Bajau people is exactly who I’ve been talking about with friends recently it amazes me that humans can achieve such superhuman feats once we develop new skills in our chosen environment 💪💪😎

I used to stand up to my neck in a pool and practice tai chi. It's a great way to test your body alignment and get used to moving slowly and with intention. Teacher Cheng Man Ching described the feeling of tai chi movement as "swimming on dry land" and having practiced for a couple of decades now, I see what he means. Got to get back to swimming

As a lifetime swimmer for more than 50 years, I can't but agree! And there were quite a lot of facts even I didn't know. Great video.

I've always loved swimming as a kid, But now that I'm almost 30 I've chosen swimming as my main exercise. All I can say is that I'm the most fit I've ever been in my life, and If I keep this up there is no reason to slowly degrade as I approach my "older" years. All that " oh im 30 now, guess i'll have bad knee's" couldn't be further from the truth.

Forgot to mention the butterfly stroke. Swimming the butterfly stroke builds insane whole body fitness, given the individual is performing it with decent technique to avoid swimmers shoulder. If you have muscle to do it it can be a game changer.
