The five people aboard a missing submersible died in a "catastrophic" event, a Coast Guard official said Thursday, bringing a grim end to the massive search for the vessel that was lost during a voyage to survey the #Titanic.

The pilot and four passengers of a missing submersible that disappeared en route to the wreckage of the Titanic are believed to be dead, the expedition company said Thursday.

Pilot and chief executive Stockton Rush and passengers Shahzada Dawood, a Pakistani businessman; his son Suleman Dawood; British adventurer Hamish Harding; and French explorer and Titanic expert Paul-Henri Nargeolet “have sadly been lost,” OceanGate Expeditions said in a statement.

OceanGate did not provide details when the company announced the “loss of life” in a statement or how officials knew the crew members had perished. The Titan's 96-hour oxygen supply likely ended early Thursday.

Later Thursday, U.S. Coast Guard officials said the search had uncovered parts of the Titan consistent with an implosion. The Coast Guard said the pieces were discovered within the search area by a remotely operated underwater robot.

The #Titan was estimated to have about a four-day supply of breathable air when it launched Sunday morning in the North Atlantic — but experts have emphasized that was an imprecise approximation to begin with and could be extended if passengers have taken measures to conserve breathable air.

Dang, I can't believe they wouldn't take better safety measures, and it cost them their lives, which is really sad. When under the sea that much, the pressure literally would cause you to explode and the body to disintegrate, all in a matter of milliseconds. It's insane to think, but that's the might of the vast deep.

At least it was a quick death for all on board. I couldnt imagine waiting to find out when the oxygen levels fully depleted. They most likely felt little pain and passed within seconds. My thoughts and prayers go out to the crew, passengers and the family's who anxiously waited. God bless them all

We need to leave well enough alone in the ocean and that goes for space as well. We were never meet to be in these places. Just sayin it’s never going to stop until humans do. I’m not surprised about anything anymore.
