Most boring college essays make one of three mistakes. They:
1. Choose a common topic (common sports, extracurriculars, instruments, clubs)
2. Make common connections (usually hard work, discipline, “grit”)
3. Use common language (teamwork makes the dream work)

In this video I’ll show you how to NOT fall into those traps… and write a (more) memorable essay.

📍 Chapters:
00:00 - Introduction
00:14 - Tip #1 - Choose a (more) uncommon topic
01:06 - Tip #2 - Make uncommon connections

I'm writing about how quitting football impacted me. It was never something i wanted to do but was expected of me because my older brothers played. How failing to enjoy it I was unable to fit into display the attribute of masculinity that it represented to my family. Transition that into being black and how specifically in the black community Hypermasculinity is perceived as a necessity to even be perceived as black. I was forced to choose between self-expression or my community's acceptance. so I hid everything, all my hobbies, and changed the way I acted. It wasn't until I started exploring hobbies even stereotypically feminine ones that I discovered what I enjoyed. I explained that through the experimentation of my hair, I found how important the self-expression I wasn't always allowed to have is. Lastly, now I'm actively trying to create spaces in the clubs I am president of. Using my responsibility and power to provide things for others I didn't have. And moving forward in life onto a college campus I wish to create and be a part of the spaces, focused on the uplifting and encouragement of students.
Is this a good idea? I have no clue what weight I should give each topic or what certain things I need to make sure to highlight and include! please help 😅

I’m writing my essay about the recent death of my grandmother, and how seeing and witnessing how her life was slowly slipping away has marked my life. I also included some things about my family dynamic and why I was close to her. Additionally I mentioned my birth country. Do you think that’s a good topic?

Hello Mr. Sawyer! My original idea was to write about my photo album / phototaking on my iPhone, connecting it to topics like appreciating smaller moments in life, being resourceful with limited technology (like features on the iPhone vs actual cameras), and striving, but not stressing over, success. I was thinking of making it a montage-like essay where I go through specific photos and the moments they were taken in (family, my robotics passion, food, etc.). My counselors think it may work if executed correctly. I'm planning to go into mech engineering. Is this a topic I should move forward with? Thank you!

Hi! Is it ok if I make a college scholarship essay topic about my life? Specifically about my parents? Is it a common topic? I am applying for common app scholarship since I want to study abroad. I am an aspiring student who have dreams to study abroad since I was just a kid; can you also please recommend on how many words I should write. Thank you!

I'm writing about theater but specifically regarding my experience with lighting and connecting it with my mental health and adventurous personality. My counselors seem to like the idea based on my first draft. I plan to study psychology. Do you think it's okay?
