Does it make sense to use open source software ... or should you write all your software from scratch?

Code on the road in a convertible! That's what I voted! Thank you Stef! I use pure FOSS for all of my projects. I'm picky with licenses too, that's why I ditched mongodb

Love your content. You absolutely should use and contribute to open source. Helps keep the development community together and creating new and emerging tech. Love open source.

Keep up the good videos.

Great video, Stefan. Remember that the *type* of Open Source license also matters. WordPress was released under GPL and as a result, they claim that any code that is _distributed_ that relies on WordPress to run is actually GPL by default (no choice), except for any images. So WordPress claims that all distributed WordPress plugins, whether they're charged for or not, are actually Open Source, which is the reason sites like GPLVault are able to stay open and sell premium plugins cheaply. If you're working on a open source project yourself and you don't care about charging, then it's not a huge deal, but if you're working on something commercial, you'd be ideally best served using software under the likes of the MIT license, where you're not required to open source software derived from it.

Ha! I knew a freelance web developer who insisted on "hand crafting" all his code himself (except for some libraries), insisting that anything less was dishonest to his customers. He nearly drove himself crazy and, of course, went out of business in no time.

As a beginner taking your full stack web development course:
1. When is a good time to start using open source code (especially when I am still in the beginning stages of learning to write and understand it)?
2. Is using open source also recommended when working for a company or just for my own freelance business?

I am a newcomer to programming and I finding the open source license a bit confusing..
how can someone do a freelance commercial project with libraries that are under the GPLv3 license?
under this license you must share your project to the public domain and not allow to close the source code
what if the company you do business with want to patent the project? you must in this case write your own code..otherwise you can find yourself in curt right?

Hi Stefan,

I will graduate from a 2 year college diploma with 8 months of co-op experience (web dev front-end and nodejs back-end) by the end of the year. I don't speak French but I would love to come to Montreal and learn (and I'll need a full time programming job ofc). How's the job market in Montreal for someone like me ? Do you think I can make it?

First some safety tip: keep your both hands occupied with driving, instead of one holding a stick for camera. (i see you start to drive "sloppy"). Better mount that thing before you start driving, just like you have during the talks (a different cam) during the first half or so of the video.

Secondly: i agree with you on open source software (mind you: open source != gratis/free of charge per definition, it just means availability of source code for the user. ) You have all kinds of open source each with it's own license types Some more restrictive than others...
here are some examples of well known licenses: MIT, GPL v2/3, Apache License, BSD

Great video Stefan,

I would like to add two minor points.
1) It's always a good idea to double check what licenses you are using in a project.
2) Last November a Node.js module was discovered to be infected with malicious code to steal bitcoin wallets and it was active for around two months with under 2 million downloads. if you're vigilant you should be fine, but there is always a small risk of rogue contributor
