What do you think of Intel's direction?

The performance is so close, it really is almost negligible. 99.9999% of people are not going to notice any difference in gaming between the i7 1400K and the 7800xd. Additionally, it remains to be seen which one will be more stable over time for various other pursuits outside of gaming like video and photo work. So far, I am getting better performance for non gaming tasks on the i7, but it's very close. I actually had to build two new PCs for my household and I built one AMD with the 78003xd and one with the Intel 14007k and I can say that there is very little difference in performance. Artificial benchmarks are cool, but real life performance is really good for both CPUs. I have also found much more headroom in my testing on the i7 in terms of over clocking so far. Definitely, if power is an issue, go with the 7800XD, otherwise, it's pretty much a wash.

I had my 14700 KF peak at 310W in Cinebench 2024 and spike to 340W in one of the CPU tests in Passmark's Performance Test. Went and lowered PL1, PL2 and max current in the BIOS (all set more or less to "unlimited" with stock settings) and also lowered the "CPU Lite Load" setting quite a bit. AFAIK, this is an MSI-only feature (or at least the name is) which will add more voltage under load to increase stability. Default setting on my board was "9" - I lowered it to 5 and left it there - I didn't try anything lower, but I might be able to get away with that. Others with identical configs report reducing this to to 3 or 2 while still retaining stability.
All these changes resulted in max VIDs going down from ~1.45V to ~1.36V in all-core, 100% loads like Cinebench 24. Power draw is also a lot lower now as is heat. Benchmark scores only "suffered" very mildly from this - the loss in scores is so little that it might actually be within margin of error/normal variance between tests. Since this means I won't have to immediately upgrade my 240 AiO, I'll leave the settings like that for now. Performance is still way better than my old 12600K.

Just bought 14700k to upgrade my PC from 8700k. In my country there is 10 euros difference between 13th gen and 14 th gen i7. So no way 13th gen. And 7800x3d is good 4 1080p gaming. Who use that resolution anymore? :D

Its funny to me how all those Youtubers are like "the difference between 13th Gen and 14th Gen" isn't worth it." and here I am, extremely happy I paid 40€ more to upgrade from 4th Gen to 14th Gen instead of 13th Gen 😂

Great review but you can't compare the temps if the intel is using a 360mm AIO and the AMD is using a 240.

well, clear straight to the point talking. Good review :)

Since 14th Gen Meteor Lake's cancellation for the desktop, Intel should've focus their energy on releasing 15th Gen Arrow Lake in 2023 and not waste time on Raptor Lake Refresh or better yet, don't release anything until Q4 2024 if they're not ready. The i5 15600k or 15600 non-k version would've been an interesting budget option for Y2023. Intel just had to put something out there in the market to make the moolah. 😅😅

Please include the 1% lows in gaming scenarios. Those are the most important thing for esport games.

What I want to see is some benchmarks and temperature tests on the i7 14700 non K variant. There’s basically nothing on YouTube about it and to me it seems like the better purchase having a 65 watt TDP, minimal difference performance wise, cheaper price and despite being locked down when it comes to overclocking, barely anyone overclocks these days anyway.

Great video! I'm a game developer, currently using an old i7 4770, need an upgrade now. Would this 14700k be the best option? Building all frkm scratch. Thanks

I appreciate that you're doing this testing with an RTX 4070 and not a 4090 like everyone else is. A lot of these armchair PC builders think the CPU performance you get with a High End GPU will be the same no matter what GPU you're using.

I am in the process of buying a new system for productivity. I am stuck between 13600k and 7700x or 7700 and 13500. It is important that it remains stable and does not overheat. What is your suggestion? Are non-3D Ryzen models as stable as Intel ones?

The CPU that doesn't make sense is the barely changed i5 14600k over the i5 13600k. 13600k is the same thing but cheaper. 14700k actually gains an additional 4 cores and threads over the 13700k

Can the 7800x3d temp be compared with the intel ? Considering your using 360aio vs 240aio

I just bought this CPU today. Now I'm enjoying full speed fan noise and insane heat waves coming out from my PC case. I guess liquid cooling won't help.
