What is IPL? Is it better than a laser? Dr Davin Lim, Dermatologist explains

BBL stands for broadband like this is a similar treatment as IPL or intense pulse light. Unlike lasers broadband light uses a spectrum of light most commonly in the blue or red wavelength.

What can be treated with IPL-BBL?

Pigment that is NOT Melasma, IPL can be excellent for freckles & sun damage or age spots.

Acne using the 405-430 blue filter, as well as the red filter.

Red veins & capillaries in addition to rosacea. Vascular lasers are generally better, however a subset of rosacea patients prefer IPL.

Is the treatment painful?
Treatments are well tolerated as the plate is chilled. We also use a coupling gel which is needed to transmit the light safely and effectively. Treatment takes between 5 to 15 minutes depending on the severity & extent of your concern.

My at home IPL device is great! Although I purchased it originally for hair removal I am now using it mostly to target fine spider veins. Although it is taking time (as the at home is not as powerful as the in office) I am pleased with my results. The hair removal gives me faster results than the spider vein treatments but they both are working.

IPL is amazing for acne and sunspots, but I haven't seen any antiwrinkles results 😢

I did a few BBL treatments and it triggered Melasma. At 45 i never in my life even when pregnant had Melasma. It’s really frustrating. Then I had Halo done and my face blew up like a balloon and had a bunch of small blisters everywhere. Ended up on steroids and antibiotics. I’m done with any lasers.

The esthetician I go to pushes for IPL all the time for active acne. They always say it 'strengthens the damaged skin underneath' after acne, is this even true? I haven't found any studies that really claim this.
