On this episode of Why We Buy iT I explain why the Casio Oceanus T200 is my favorite watch in my collection. I never thought a Quartz watch could be my favorite watch. As a watch enthusiast the intricate design and operation of a Mechanical movement is hard to resist. Of course that isn't the only thing that attracts me to a watch. As my collection grew I came to realize that the quality of the finishing on a watch, it's aesthetic design, and visual appeal were more important to me than what's inside the case. That's not to say that I don't appreciate an accurate mechanical movement, with an impressive power reserve, and amazing complications. If I had to choose between a basic looking watch with an amazing movement or an impressive looking watch with a basic movement; I'm probably going to choose the impressive looking watch every time.
Now just because the Casio Oceanus has a Quartz movement doesn't make that movement basic. The Casio Tough Solar movement is impressive. Not visually impressive like a high horology mechanical movement would be. It is functionally impressive because it can remain dormant in total darkness after a full charge for 5+ months and keep the time. It is impressive because it is very accurate (+/- 15 seconds per month) whether you connect to the application or radio tower. None of that is why I purchased the Casio Oceanus T200 though. I bought the watch because it's an absolutely beautiful timepiece.
For their Oceanus line of watches Casio decided to use Zaratsu polishing in order to set them apart from everything else they produce. The Casio Oceanus T200 shines in a way that few watches do. Watches 10 times the price don't sparkle in the light as impressively as the T200. The subtle blue tint to the sapphire crystal, and deep blue colour of the dial pops just enough to grab your interest, but not so much that it's comical or distracting. Most solar watches have a panel that's visable in the light that diminishes the appearance of a watch. Even in the brightest sunlight I've never noticed the solar panel on the Casio Oceanus T200.
Size wise the Casio Oceanus fits me perfect. Now I have a 7.25 inch wrist so if you have a wrist that's smaller than 7 inches it might appear a bit large. Although the slim height of the watch might mitigate it. Unfortunately the Casio Oceanus T200 is a Japanese Domestic Market watch so you might be forced to buy it sight unseen online like I did.
Bought on Ebay at Japan's Watch Shop
It came well packaged, and arrived earlier than expected in excellent condition.
