I'm from the future and 40Tb is just a tiny flashdrive in my time.

I think you need to add a disclaimer here:Not all RAID configurations support swappable disks. Getting access to your files over WAN will most likely require a secure connection to it. You really do not want to expose your data to the public internet without network hardening.

As someone who works in IT: I would never host any PII, HIPPA, or any other sensitive information on a NAS that is internet facing. The chances arent huge but there are bots constantly scanning open ports in this case 445 or 6690. They try multiple passcode/usernames to try and break into your files. Hosting a NAS on a portion of your network that is isolated from your WAN and IOT devices is the best scenario while keeping security strong

Ahh yes, developing my own security system before storing couple megabytes of data in it

Off-site storage can be useful. Local raid system does not protect against all problems

For anyone even considering this product and the 10gbit upgrade on this NAS, you gotta check if you even need it. 10gbit is a lot for private use. Especially for 40~ terrabytes

Always remember the backup strategy 3-2-1, when you’re using NAS. It is three copies are made of the data to be protected, the copies are stored on two different types of storage media and one copy of the data is sent off site.

We had such a thing 10 years back in work just to do backups. Synology was great :)

I’ve had one for about 6 years. Game changer. They are great and the interface is well built and easy to use

i have a NAS too, but what you pay cloud for, is not so much the space, it's the reliability and redundancy of the Data Center. Anyway. A NAS is a good idea for LAN Purpose, though.

The major cloud storage companies have dedicated staff that maintain the hardware needed so your files are always available. There are tradeoffs with personal clouds. I recommend using both: tax returns, ID scans, etc in personal, with whatever non-sensitive data backing up to the cloud.

Man I bought this exact model about a year ago. The Synology apps are great and reliable. I had an Asustor before that and this was the upgrade. Love this NAS

As someone who specializes in offensive cyber security, i love these, it makes getting everything the target has a 1000 times easier

Jesus, it’s like watching a child trying to remember what his dad told him a NAS is.
