The stretch 'Walkman' - fixed-up & shown-off

preview_player
Показать описание
Sony occasionally repurposed the Walkman cassette mechanisms for devices like this impressive do-it-all travel companion for the international (walk)man of mystery. Suitable for carrying in a briefcase, recording meetings and voice memos, working as an alarm clock, catching up on news from back home and listening to stereo music cassettes on the plane.

UPDATE: I noticed in the closeups that a few parts of the Walkman needed another clean - so after the video was edited I’ve gone back and done this. Specifically there’s a bit of belt residue that you can see on the tape door in some shots. That stuff gets everywhere - you’ll also see it on my fingers in the review of the 40th Anniversary Walkman.

The touchscreen revolution has wiped out a lot of beautiful engineering. It is easy to cram a ton of buttons and widgets onto a phone display, but integrating controls and feedback in a physical product with mechanical buttons while having it make sense and be aesthetically pleasing, now that is an art that is slowly fading into history.

Hi Matt, in the next video you should talk about the Sony Walkman, that would be interesting.

I think you'll find that you need to replace the belt in that.

You should do a muppet outdo skit in this

I greatly enjoy the lengths you go to in order to criticise your own viewers. I mean, some people would just make a snarky comment. You make brilliant, fully-scripted puppet comedy videos. I wish I could channel my annoyance into such a creative outlet.

"Like a"

"Laika, the Russian space-dog."

Spat my coffee. Damn you, Techmoan.

I laughed at that one. A lot. 🤣

My god, you just helped me more than I expected.. I watched this for entertainment and ended up finding out why I wasn't able to tune some bands in on my SDR setup. I have 3 SDR radio tuners and use them for listening to FM (WFM), police bands (they're not encrypted in southern Florida) and weather radio on narrow FM (NFM), which is important down here during hurricane season.. But I never was able to get lower frequencies. The room I use it in has 4 LED strips for a total of around 8m under some tables I have here, as well as 3 LED bulbs on the ceiling fan. I turned all this off and started getting reception I never did before. I can't believe this was causing the problem..

"Such a great skit at the end, I think that's one of your best ones yet!" he says before he has watched all of them..

My wm-70 has a lovely metal cover that the belt slips under right next to the motor. It's so much fun to get belt mess out of. I ended up having to floss it with paper towels soaked in alcohol. That was the first time I realized that it was possible for time to stop.

Always nice to see Techmoan restore a Walkman back to functioning just like it did 30 years ago

The mechanism in this deck looks identical to the one in my WM-R202 (which makes perfect sense considering they're from the same time period). I wonder how many other machines Sony used it in. It seems like the difference between Walkmans and Cassette-Corders comes down to purpose, with the former being primarily for music and the latter for speech/dictation.

Buying a walkman advertised as not-working has also worked out nicely for me. Just a belt replacement (from the same site as you used) and adjusting the speed was enough to get it purring again.

I think I may only be satisfied when I get a full feature length techmoan puppets video, until then, THIS IS THE BEST PUPPETS YET. Really accurately reflects the comments section, and working with customers at jobs in general. Hilarious, yet deep and insightful. 5/7!!
