What about the thousands of years of humanist thought in Ancient Greece and Rome? Religious thinking holds humanity back yet tries to take all the credit of progress.

Theo, bless him, wants more religion in the public sphere, like Baroness Varsi.
Sadly for Mr Hobson most folks believe that supernatural worship is rather silly and secular values flourish because that are based on reason and are actually the best way for people to be free to worship anything they wish.

Theo, for centuries the Catholic church threatened children with threats of hellfire and torture for those who did 'believe ' in its doctrine.
Like it or not, Christian teaching preaches we are born 'sick' and orders us to be 'well' and endlessly praise the creator.
This is the polar opposite of secular humanism.

This guy suffers from an severe case of confirmation bias.  Humanism developed despite Christianity, not because of it. Christians and the catholic church fought humanism tooth and nail.

Laws attributed to Yahweh and the implementation of such pronouncements would be illegal in most countries today. If this God exists, he created crimes against humanity, not humanism.
