U nailed it - direction simplifies process for new mechanics

It’s better to warm the engine to operating temp before adjusting timing.

THIS WAS WITH MECHANICAL DISTRIBUTOR, I CAN REMEMBER THE VACUM YA THERE IS A PROCESS WITH VACUM LINES AND TIMING A CHEVY THE RIGHT WAY

kinda hard to say. i mean if you used a vacuum gauge on the manifold vacuum @ idle and just twisted the distrbutor until the vacuum read its highest at idel WITHOUT dragging the starter, then thats what the engine wants.

its different for every combination. usually with all thing being equal, a bigger cam wants more initial timing sometimes as high as 22 degrees at idle.

but you need to limit total advance to maybe 34-36 degrees. MSD and aftermarket distributors allow you to do that with mechanical advance limiter bushing to limit mechanical advance or fully electronic ones you can program. perfect timing every time that way

You should explain how much timing changed with the amount you turned the distributor

@superiorracingchannel3368 do you know anything about ford 460 efi? Has a mild cam and has top end rebuilt, new tps, iac, alternator, battery, clean throttle body etc also. It also has egr disabled and thermactor and secondary air injector pump and hoses deleted as well. Set timing at 10° btdc and will idle in park or neutral at 1k but in gear it sits around 700-750. Sometimes 650, is this normal in older motors or is something off?

CHEVYS RUN GOOD ADVANCED, I USE MY LIGHT, IM RUNNING ADART 350 CHEVY BLOCK WITH THE EAGLE 283 CRANG MAKING IT A CHEVY 302, IT SEEMS FOR YEARS WHY ITS RUNNING I START ADVANCING THE TIMMING TO THE HIGHEST IDLE AND THEN BACK UP A HAIR AND IT RIGHT ON WITH MY LIHT AND ITS ADVANCED BUT RUNNING GOD, BUT PROBABLY NOT NESSESARY JUST TO HAVING RUNNING NICE, BUT TO GET THE MOST POWER I CAN ADVANCED SEEMS TO WORK, I DID THIS WITH ALL MY SMALLBLOCK CHEVYS, JUST THINKING OUT LOUS, NEVER TRY THIS AT HOME LOL

I need help I have high idle and tried everything but timing if I retard it will it lower my idle technically???

Question: once up to temp it turns over several times before it starts. Is that to much timing or not enough?

I got a 305 small block where do you start off at to make sure your dead on when final timing is set

Good video but it had extra timing because the vacuum advance was seeing manifold vacuum not ported so actually you just threw it right out of wack nice job

Hi can you tell me how low you can get this to tick over?  Fist make sure the points gap is correct, but if you have electronic ignition you can adjust the timing until it idles as slow as possible, Make sure you only retard the ignition a little and not advance it. Turning the distributer in the same direction as the spin of the rotor arm retards and against the spin of the rotor arm advances. Slightly more retarded then the user manual should let the engine run a it cooler, but advancing it would overheat your valves and burn them out. See how low you can get the engine ticking over without it going lumpy or running rough.
