US Navy Oil Tanker Runs Aground

The USNS Big Horn ran aground yesterday in Oman and has partially flooded, and it could completely end the Navy’s mission. The Big Horn is a US Navy oil tanker that refuels the carrier strike group that is currently unsuccessfully bombing the Houthis. It’s the only tanker the US has deployed in the Middle East and there aren’t any other tankers available for deployment. The Navy is scrambling and reportedly looking at commercial oil tankers to fill the gap but.. those tankers have to be fit with special equipment and take significantly longer than the Navy’s own tankers. Refueling time is a particularly vulnerable time for ships, especially the USS Lincoln. The aircraft carrier may be nuclear powered but its planes are not. So it doesn’t have any defenses because it's like a bee hive, and the bees, the F-18s are its offense and defense. And without honey & jet fuel, it’s a sitting duck. So tough decisions lay ahead for the American Navy especially as the region enters another war.

Hopefully the navy finally learns the lesson everyone has been warning it about for years and actually invests in auxiliary ships again.

"A beehive“

YOU HAD THE *PERFECT* OPPORTUNITY TO SAY "HORNETS NEST“

if one tanker being out of commission can put a careror group to a halt, that is a major logistic hole in the navy that would definitely be exploited in wartime

Dude, the navy is short on ships, which is crazy when you consider our capacity to build more ships has significantly diminished. The US needs to increase its ability to build and maintain their ships. We still come out ahead in raw tonnage compared to any other navy, but we are spread thin. Not really seeing enough action from politicians on this. It’s time to start opening up more shipyards.

One tiny note

Its not unsuccessful as you said

The houthis have been demolished and only the most fight to the death jihads havnt jumped ship (pun intended)

Generally tho the houthis have been decimated and the carriers arnt defenceless ad they have sams and cwis systems to defend them

A carrier is not a sitting duck without the aircraft. This isn't the 1940s. Now, US carriers are equipped with several Cram (3000rpm) machine guns, surface to Air Missle launchers (SAM), and bore headed marines.

“Sitting duck” ?! I wasn’t aware the US pulled all of its escort ships away from the carrier group. Poor lonely aircraft carrier😢

It's a little unnerving that a NAVY (our *maritime* service branch) ship ran aground. 😭😂

Why do they rely on only 1 support ship? There should always be one on standby
