• Eating disorders are more than just about food, even if the name might make you think otherwise.
• Mental health problems usually influence such disorders, requiring help from psychological and medical experts.
• These experts consider them to be psychological conditions that lead to the development of unhealthy eating habits. In severe cases, they can cause major health problems and even death.
• The disorders may be caused by affected brain biology, repressive cultural ideals, certain personality traits, and genetics.
• With that in mind, let’s look at 6 common types of eating disorders:
Anorexia Nervosa
• Anorexia nervosa is perhaps the most common eating disorder, occurring during adolescence and young adulthood.
• It is often influenced by obsessive-compulsive tendencies and affects women more than it does men.
• People with this condition usually see themselves as overweight even if they may be the opposite and restrict their diets because of it.
• Symptoms include:
• Being underweight compared to your age and height
• Persistent need to get thinner
• Restricted eating patterns
• Not eating regularly out of fear of gaining weight
• Distorted body image
• Bodyweight and shape influencing self-esteem
Bulimia Nervosa
• Bulimia is another common eating disorder that occurs during adolescence and young adulthood.
• It is characterized by eating large amounts in one go (called binging) until you are so full you cannot keep the food in.
• This is followed by “purging” to let the improperly digested food out.
• The purging may be done through vomiting, excessive exercise, diuretics, fasting, or laxatives.
• Symptoms of bulimia are:
• Regular binge-eating episodes
• Fear of gaining weight
• Regular purging through inappropriate means
• Bodyweight influencing self-esteem
Binge Eating Disorder
• Binge-eating disorder is quite common and affects many adolescents and young adults.
• People dealing with it end up going on regular binges, without worrying about calorie restrictions.
• Symptoms caused by binge-eating disorder are similar to anorexia and bulimia. They include:
• Bingeing while not being hungry
• Feeling ashamed of bingeing and doing it secretly
• Having a lack of control while bingeing
• No purging behavior or calorie restrictions
Pica
• Pica is an eating disorder that deals with the consumption of things that are not considered to be food.
• This includes soil, chalk, ice, paper, hair, dirt, wool, pebbles, clothes, laundry detergent, and cornstarch.
• It occurs in people of all ages, who are susceptible to an increased risk of nutritional deficiencies, poisoning, gut injuries, and infections.
Rumination Disorder
• This newly recognized eating disorder causes a person to regurgitate already chewed and swallowed food within 30 minutes of a meal.
• They either rechew and re-swallow the food or spit it out.
• It arises within 3 to 12 months of age and can cause malnutrition and severe weight loss in infants if not resolved.
• Adults with the condition usually limit when and what they eat in public.
Avoidant/Restrictive Food Intake Disorder (ARFID)
• ARFID is an updated name for “feeding disorder of infancy and early childhood”.
• The condition arises before the age of 7 and can last into adulthood.
• It causes disturbed eating with people avoiding certain food items due to colors, taste, textures, or temperatures.
• Symptoms of ARFID are:
• Eating habits causing interference in social life
• Food avoidance leads to decreased calorie intake
• Nutrition deficiencies
• Poor development for age and being underweight

Is there an eating disorder where when you feel like you've done something wrong, like you hit someone, and you try not to eat because you feel guilty for eating because you hit that person?

I definitely have binge eating disorder. I have no desire to eat less to lose weight or to purge food but will mindlessly binge and feel guilty afterwards. That’s why I try to eat healthy often so my body is still getting what it needs. But not specifically for weight lost. I have gained weight from emotionally eating and stress but as soon as my life style changed, I went back down. I still struggle binge eating especially when I’m PMS’ing like I currently am.

Ever since I was little ive been fat I've been bullyed all my life and my life has never been normal my father was hardly in the picture and when he was he would abuse my mother I've gone through so much and I've gone from therapist to therapist telling me I have anxiety, depression and etc I remember a time when my (skinny) mother took me to the doctor before in her words "you are too fat" and the doctor said .... You just eat too much... Everytime I look in the mirror or at food I feel like I'm going to cry but no matter how much I eat I'm always still hungry just writing this I'm crying what should I do?

Heres a tricky one for me if anyone can help. I have an eating disorder (diagnosed by an ed specialist) but i never got to find out what i had and in the since i first got it a bit has changed.
First of all at the start of my ed the ammount of i could intake maybe went down 60% and i only ate 1 time a day in hindisgth to 3 times like i did before that. But rigth now that isnt relevant to my current symptoms. Im not a picky eater. But when i start thinking about food my whole body shakes and i can barely look at food without the silverware barely reaching my mouth. I despise eating with other people as it makes me believe theyre watching my everymove, judging me. It makes it gard to eat in public. I always feel guilty when i eat to much in a day wich forces me to eat less the next day. I do sometimes eat 2 meals a day but also 1 wich changes alot. But when i eat my second meal i feel guilty. I count calories and i eat under 1000 calories a day. I know i have an eating disorder wich came out of body dysmorphia. I loose maybe 0.3kg a day now because of my habits.
(Sorry if it doesnt make sense, im not the best at writing)

does this mean i actually have anorexia nervosa ? i just realized ive reached one year since my eating got really bad. i could go weeks without eating if i didn't force myself. and when i do force myself, it's a very small amount and i feel nauseous afterwards. i'm hoping i don't have an ED, but it seems as though this is where i'm at. i physically cannot bring myself to eat. even a few chips and i fear ill gain weight. i'm slowly obsessing over my weight. i'm almost at a point where i need to stop, otherwise it'll get bad. i just don't know how to. i feel sick just by thinking of eating. do i really have an ED? i don't want that

Is there an eating disorder where you will eat like you haven’t eaten in days for only one meal then skip a few for no reason? I struggle with eating meals but I could snack all day long but I just don’t want to.
( I am sorry if that doesn’t make sense)
