There’s a basic misunderstanding about how copyright laws work. I’ve been a pro musician for over 40 years, and I’ve studied copyright law. There’s a thing called mechanical license: when a song is released to the public, then anyone can use that song, as long as they pay the applicable royalties. They don’t have to ask “permission” from the copyright holder. Artists can’t sue on the basis of copyright violation.

But artists can sue, and win, on the basis that having their music associated with a toxic entity like Trump and the Republican Party harms their brand and costs them money. The can hit Trump with cease and desist orders.
