How to make real ale : Guinness Extra Stout (second attempt!)

Hi everyone

This was my second attempt at brewing Guinness - the previous time I accidentally used Crystal Malt instead of flaked Barley and ended up with a very strange (but still drinkable) dark beer !

In this video I try to accurately calculate the cost of brewing, Here are the details:

- Optic Pale Malt - 3410 grams, £4.60
- Flaked Barley - 975 grams, £1.76
- Roasted Barley - 485 grams, £0.87
- Hops - 38 grams of Goldings, £1.09
- Nottingham Yeast, 1 packet, £2.00
- Water, £0.20 (a pure guess based on a daily water rate of £0.49)
- Sterilising solution, £0.12
- Electricity, £1.43 (based on running my 2 kilowatt boiler for about 6 hours)
- Depreciation of equipment, £300 cost over 10 year, 8 brews a year = £3.75

Total, £15.82, which for a 40 pint batch works out to be approx. 40p a pint ! (and not 37p as I say in the video).

All the best

I watched this video 5 days ago and ordered the same mash tun and am pleased to say it worked very well. Before this I was using a grain bag that I sparged over a very large steamer pan, it was a cumbersome operation and there was always loads of starch in the boiler. The wort was surprisingly clear when it came out of the mash tun. A good investment. Cheers.

I'm enjoying your video's Clive; good editing cutting out the boring bits. You seem to enjoy it a lot. Currently brew kits but contemplating AG. In your cost calculations, you forgot the chiller water, which I presume uses a lot more water than that used in the beer. I'm on a meter, so that would be a real cost for me.

Clive, I viewed a couple of your videos this morning and was surprised at how similar our techniques are. I batch sparge instead of fly sparge. I am interested in where you are located in the UK. My family can me from Tenterden, and Peasmarsh in the 1830's and the first thing they grew in Wisconsin was hops. I'm looking to do some traditional SW English Ales, and would appreciate any quidance. PS I brewed a Stout on 11/06/2012 and will be adding 4oz. of coffee to the secondary.
