In my specific situation, I do believe it’s beneficial to be friends with my ex. I messed up. Dan, i sincerely thank you for your clarity and brilliant advice. You managed to spark hope in me, and that's a big thing for me cause recently I've been feeling like there isn't any. I had a fantastic woman, a fantastic relationship in which she was crazy about me. I was an utter idiot and did some shit and we fell apart. She left, but we stayed in touch for around a year, part of that period even living together, still having sex occasionally and generally still behaving as a couple. But I was stupid, i tried to convince myself that she's over me and i should seek other opportunities, so i haven't actively been trying to get her back at that point. Recently, I had a wake up call and had started talking more with her and she even invited me to come visit her at her place and stay for a few days. Although now, for the first time she is very specific about how she only wants to be friends with me. She keeps talking about myb seeing other people and just being focused on herself. She said when i come and visit we shouldn't be romantic or intimate. So I said I'll respect her choice and come as a friend. couple of days after this convo, she's been talking about how she wants to travel somewhere, so I surprised her with flight tickets to Rome, Italy. She was clearly happy about it but still a bit reserved. I guess that's my whole point, she keeps giving me these crumbs but insists she's over me and she wants to be friends. At the same time, calling me pet names she used when we were together and sending me seductive selfies. So, should I take her to Rome and have some hope of rebuilding some chemistry? Completely fucking agree. Unless you had been together for over 6 months, she won't be invested enough to come back through no contact (tried for 2 months and wasn't going anywhere). The answer is limited contact and keep the tone slightly more than friends.
