Strap yourselves in folks – this one’s a long one! This episode on Social Stratification looks at gender, sexuality, ethnicity, age and disabilities as ways of differentiating people in society. Throughout, I consider the key sources and forms of inequalities these social groups experience and the ways in which life-chances in education, employment, the law, media and health are affected by them.

In this video, I cover the following things:
- Overlaps in inequalities between social groups – Discrimination, Prejudice, Life Chances, Media Representation, Stereotypes, Status, Moral Panics, Laws/Policies – 02:21 – 11:15
- Gender and Differentiation – Patriarchy, Discrimination, Glass Ceiling, Male Gaze, Crisis of Masculinity – 11:16 – 17:41
- Sexuality and Differentiation – The role of the law and the impact of media representation using the 1980s AIDS crisis as a case study – 17:42 – 24:03
- Ethnicity and Differentiation – Definitions, Multiculturalism, Racism, Institutional Racism, Laws/Policies, Employment, Health – 24:04 – 33:12
- Disability – The Medical Model vs. Social Model of Disability – 33:13 – 36:32
- Disability and Age and Differentiation – Prejudice, Discrimination, Income and Employment, Status, Marginalisation, Social Exclusion, Media Representation, Stereotyping – 36:33 – 42:14
- 10 key terms to know – Prejudice, Discrimination, Patriarchy, Scapegoating, Representation, Moral Panic, Institutional Racism, Marginalisation, Medical vs. Social Models, Ageism – 42:15 – 46:33
- A word on exams, with 4 mark question and answer – 46:34 – 49:58
- Recap and Outro – 49:59 – 53:22

The video is aimed at GCSE Sociology Eduqas students but will also be useful as a recap to those studying different exam boards, e.g. AQA Sociology and/or those studying at a higher level, particularly if you’re newer to the subject.

Stratification and Differentiation is a huge topic, with my next video being the final one in the series, so keep an eye out for that coming soon…

actually, it was only illegal to be gay before 1967, it never was illegal to be lesbian due to a legal wording oversight
