Everything You Need to Know about the DJI Avata 2

The DJI Avata 2 is a great drone when you use it right, but if you try and use it outside of what it was designed for it's not so great. Lets talk about what the strengths of this drone are: flight characteristics, image quality, ease of use and safety are just a few, but we can't talk about the great points of the avata 2 without also talking about the bad things. We will cover those as well in this video as we look at the controllers the goggles and what exactly this drone can and cannot do.

I made a mistake saying the Avata 2 cannot take photos. it can however it is not a drone I would recommend taking photos with.

I’ve had the Avata 2 for almost 2 months and I am flipping in love with it. I am 100% a beginner. I did own the DJI mini three pro which I only flew a couple times and pretty much use the active tracking in it and was really bored with it. I thought I was gonna do more with it. But when I saw this new DJI release and all the videos about the motion controller I was hooked. For the past two months I have used nothing but the motion controller and to me, it’s the closest thing of flying. The goggles do a beautiful job with the image while you’re flying. I go out in the morning at sunrise and fly around the treetops weaving in and out just to start my day out. It clears my head and every time I’m done flying, I can tell my heart rate is up because it’s so much fun. I’ve taken it out to two ATV racing events out in the woods and started chasing some of the racers and wow what a blast I had. This thing is so easy to fly with the motion controller. I do wish it went a little faster than 36 mph, but I know there’s a limit with the motion controller and as of right now I’m fine with that. Maybe with some more experience I may get the real controller. My only complaint is the range, it seems any type of obstructions in between me and the drone I lose signal quickly. I am lucky to get 300 yards if I am in the middle of a forest unless I a way up in the air.. But I highly recommend getting one, takes beautiful video in d-log and with the 3 batteries you can fly for awhile

Purchased the Avata 2 for the image quality. My flights tend to be around sunrise or sunset and I found Avata 1 and O3 air unit being too dark, losing detail in the shadows. Avata 2 is quieter than Avata 1 which reduces the chance of someone being annoyed by my flying. The safety features allow me to relax, giving me a pause button in case someone does come up to talk to me. Goggles 3 is an improvement for me vs Goggles 2, I could never get the whole screen in focus, I even tried multiple types of aftermarket padding. Goggles 3 bottom knobs hold better as Goggles 2 the knobs come loose and require me to refocus. Remote ID built in is so much better than dangling a wire to my phone. The nice thing is you can use the Goggles 2 or Integra Goggles with the Avata 2. You're absolutely right that Avata 2 can't do everything, but a tool that can get most of the smooth FPV style shots.
Great video. Enjoyed it. Where those rock spires in California? Reminded me of Trona Pinnalces.

Many people that like the Avata don’t have fpv experience (like me) so it’s a ‘whole new world’, and really awesome. It’s a great addition to my M3Pro.

This channel must have 110M subs right now. So rare world we are.

Mavic 3 pro Mavic 4 pro mini, just learning 1 year in. I was thinking A2 but ... reality I'm not ready. Thanks for your awesome videos!!

I like the Avata 2 especially for exploring unknown terrain, such as flying through the forest, flying into unknown rooms (e.g. caves, lost places) or in any tight environment where you would risk your props if using an usual camera drone such as Mini 4 Pro. Meanwhile I have designed a clipable light source for both the vps and main cameras, so I can even fly into dark places without GPS coverage.

The Avata 2 is big upgrade over the first Avata. The camera is so much better on this one, I can now get the shots I want to capture. I'm not a FPV guy, this is only FPV style drone I own. I just wish I had to time to fly it more, I still tend to use my camera drones more. Great video, and thanks for sharing Jake.

That's just great, Jake! I've been going back and forth with my decision to get this thing. You dropped this review exactly ten minutes after I decided to get the insta 360 Ace Pro. It's all good. I'll eventually get it anyway. Great review!!!

Great video.
Researching my first FPV drone and still stuck. I don't do commercial work as such, more event type stuff and music videos + just wanting to do some cinematic stuff, maybe light acro just for fun.

Having used DJI camera gimbals for years. Avata 2 was my first stop. It seems to do most of that. An acquaintance dived waterfalls etc so it seemed to be able to probably more than I need it too.
At least for the first 12 months or so. Also the longer flight time per battery is a bonus.

Bit more research, finding a bit of hate for DJI when others have asked this question and the contender is the GepRC Cinelog 35 v2, especially since you can now use the Goggles 3 with O3 units. It seems to have a bit more kick and is a bit more agile, while still not really built for acro. The extra cost for needed a GoPro is offset by the fact I can use it for non-drone scenarios. I hear these are louder though and not sure if they can hover. Google is not giving me great results on that front.

Any insight on the A2 vs the CL35?

I have really enjoyed the Avata 2. I had been flying the DJI FPV and just haven’t been impressed with how it flies. I assumed I’d go manual with the 2, but honestly I’ve been having so much fun with the motion controller I haven’t even worried about getting the other controller. For following my friends on dirt bikes and doing some real estate stuff, it’s great.

Great in-depth overview Jake. It was impressive to see the example shots of the Avata 2 and the Raptor, and how close you got them from a color grade perspective. Very cool to see your daughter flying with the motion controller. I’ve been trying to get my son to do the same 😅 but he hates drones because I always make them wait in the car while I fly lol. Agree on the goggles camera being pointless. Great video 🎉

Crashed my avata 1 in a river by Denali, definitely looking for a range extender for the avata 2

Yeah had to get one. Couldn't help myself but I don't regret it I love it. I love it a lot. If i had to choose between missus or drone I'll take drone every time

The only sad part is that the "real" controller doesent include in the package what i am watching :) Love your filming Jake, that is stunning stuff you are doing :)

Thanks for the video, we currently fly two Air 3's, debating whether or not we need an FPV

Speaking of Ducted props presenting some weaknesses, dynamically - I saw a video the other day where a guy clipped the ducts right the hell off. Interesting and the resulting performance was more dynamic than anyone expected, I think. Is that a practical move? Well, no. That's absolutely obvious, and expected. But as an experiment, and as a demonstration of how much power, performance and wind resistance can be regained, it was a complete success. Now we need a way to TEMPORARILY remove and replace the ducts. lol. That's not a thing, but could make for a fun "multi-faceted" drone... Speaking of WIND, apparently Avata 2 drops out of Manual mode if it's getting blown about by the wind.

I have zero FPV experience and I really like operating my Avata 2. Briiliant fun. Most of the time I am in normal mode. A goal is to get to manual mode in the future. I have the controller 3 on order, and a simulator program is ready to go!
