I have been trying to figure out something similar for my backyard wild birds to help me with my gardening this year. I hate killing bugs, but I am happy for them to be eaten. I have tried putting bugs in the bird feeders, but of course those grubs just wiggle their way out. Anyways, your idea for your chickens is giving me some more food for thought. Unfortunately, backyard birds don't have long necks and height like chickens do to do a taller jar. I really don't want to have to get pet birds (I don't eat eggs or meat) just to help me in the garden with grubs and pests I find, though I am considering quail for that purpose. You gotta made an in house permaculture of pet chicken and roach trap, because roaches were more in house problem, and some chicken made good pets, just depends on if you can have a solo chicken as pet though, if the solo chicken likes to tag along person and get petted.

You should make a video on chicken food. I see you used store food. We do too. I tried to put together some food with corn, oats, and sunflower seed but think it's too much protein or something and the chickens started to poop yellow so I think it may be too much form their liver. You being an engineer you might be able to figure out a good mix to have even healthier eggs.
