During our ongoing 20 year drought water restrictions, I learned that clothes don’t need to be washed nearly as often as I had been doing. But the biggest factor in making clothes last is to air-dry them, the heat and friction when tumbling dry ruins them quickly (the abundance of water in washing reduces this friction a lot). Also, avoid any hot place for storing them. I stored some clothes in my top floor, a finished, but uninsulated space, one summer and everything with even a little spandex in it was ruined (spandex and elastic break down quickly in hear). The pants just fell off, all the stretch was completely gone.

I have a full-size steamer in my laundry room and use it constantly. For crisp woven items of cotton or linen, especially, I iron them, it gives much better results. After I wash and air-dry my clothes, I batch them there until I can do the steaming and ironing, then let them air-dry before putting them in my closet. Having everything in my closet clean and steamed/ironed really simplifies my life. I leave my ironing board up in my laundry room and have a powerful stand fan for air-drying my clothes on hangers on a clothesline there. Most clothes dry overnight, about half the time as without a fan, and the fan reduces wrinkling and is energy-cheap to operate, especially compared to a tumble dryer.

I mostly wear light colors, including footwear. I spray two light coats on a my light-colored leather or suede footwear (and clothing) before the first wearing, it helps keep them clean a lot longer and liquids will bead up long enough to be blotted up with a tissue or paper towel, rather than soaking it, if one acts fast. I spray the footbeds, too, on open shoes and don’t put lotion on my feet before wearing them, that’s what stains them. I put lotion on the might before, then shower off the residue in the morning, clean feet means clean shoes.
