I had a smallish but painful bunion - just a small bump on the big toe. It started with a pair of “earth shoes” (you have to be in your 60’s to know what those are) in about 1978. A few years ago I finally decided to get a consult. They told me mine would be solved with a quick and easy surgery, just a bit of trimming the bone. The recovery was lengthy and awful and my big toe has been stiff ever since. I still have to be very careful buying shoes or get pain. Now my big toe is starting to bend toward the others which are crooked. Now the big toe and second toe are meeting and both growing painful bumps which is what brought me here. My reason for sharing this story is to let people know surgery may make things worse rather than better. I have heard this from others as well. Please get multiple consults and talk to lots of people before opting for surgery. Good luck fellow sufferers.

Very informative. Delaying surgery on my painful bunion led to secondary problems with osteophytes on heel, Sural nerve neuroma, and arthritis in the sacro-illiac joint. So the bunion itself may not get much worse if you wait for surgery, but a lot of other problems may be caused because of changes in gait/walking due to bunion pain and how that impacts the mechanics of your entire musculoskeletal system....

I've had a bunion on my left foot since I was about 13 maybe. The ironic thing about this video, is that I barely ever wore shoes at that time, constantly running around barefoot. I've never really known why I had it. Now I'm going to assume it's mostly just genetics for me.
Thanks for the info

Someone may make a huge medical breakthrough in bunions prevention.
The foot is an incredible engineering marvel, a lifetime of footfalls with incalculable tonnage of use.
Some means to realign that first metatarsal for foot health.

How do the toe extensors get stronger than the toe flexors? When you look at conditions such as foot drop it is always the plantarflexors that seem to overpower the dorsiflexors. Even when you MMT the toes you have more power in flexion vs extension

I usually wear sandals and shoes with wide toe box, and go barefoot a lot. I do think shoes have a big influence on whether you end up with bunions.

Thankyou for talking about hammer toes, many only talk about the bunions. I have a hammer toe on each foot but no pain, it just means shows are difficult to find.

I have great toe and flat foot and its turn extreme and I got to know that its hullux valgus. How I get well from this thing? Another question is what I have to do and what to wear in my foot to walk free of any support.

I have a small bit of gout on one joint and was told by a foot specialist that I don't have a bunion on either foot. My toes are bent in but not very much. That said, the bunion area hurts on both feet and I'm shifting my footwear to be more friendly to my feet and adding toe spacers to my feet in my shoes. I am also doing my own taping to straighten the big toe and gently spacing (a knitted spacer that I created) between my other toes to passively speed up the process of being able to wear the toe spacers longer in my shoes. My feet thank me when I put on toe spacers inside the appropriate shoes and I look forward to the day when I can put them on in the morning and wear them the whole day. Thanks for this informative presentation. Although I may not be able to change the shape of my feet (and then again maybe since they are flexible), I'm looking forward to experience less pain when walking. (Having spacers in my shoes are helping to correct not just toe but other foot mechanics and bringing relief.)
