I remember seeing a documentary with North Korean defectors in South Korea and they went to many different supermarkets before they believed the supermarkets weren't just there for show. That says a lot.

I spent two months in the DPRK in 2005. We traveled from Pyongyang to Wonsan to Hamhung up to the Changjin (Chosin) Reservoir. We then left by driving all the way down to Panmunjom and into SK. The DPRK is the most destitute place with the most miserable looking people I have ever seen anywhere in the world. You could see the misery on most every face in every town along our travels. Wonsan was completely without power at night and at a resort in Hamhung we had hot water for one hour a day. There were very few vehicles anywhere, even in Pyongyang. The propaganda machine is hard at work in the DPRK.
