Pilot TRIES To Land!

This pilot tried to land his ATR-72 at Lanzarote Airport in the Canary Islands. This airport is on the coast and the runway is 2400m / 7875 ft long but it has a displaced threshold when landing to the north as in this video. There's still plenty of room to land an ATR-72 but if you have some strong winds and possibly windshear then it can sometimes be a challenge for some pilots. The best thing you can do in a situation like this is just go around and this pilot perhaps should have made the go around decision sooner but I don't think this was the worst landing ever because he didn't crash.

The airport said this was the worst landing ever, but I disagree. He didn't crash! This is an ATR-72 trying to land at Lanzarote Airport in the Canary Islands. The runway is 2400M / 7875 ft long and there is a displaced threshold when you are coming in over the water and landing to the north. The winds might present a challenge at times but if you are halfway down the runway and you still haven't landed then you should definitely go around. This pilot kept trying to force the landing but he eventually executed the go around and came back about 15 minutes later and landed without incident.

That pilot saved his own life by deciding to go around. Too many have committed to an accident they knew was preventable

As a student pilot shooting T&G's in a Cherokee, I had developed the bad habit of driving the a/c straight down onto the numbers on our short but adequate runway.
Once, I bounced the nose wheel so badly I ballooned about 60 ft. and was heading back down for another, .possibly tragic, bounce. I shoved the throttle full forward and retracted the manual flaps very slowly. I had to fly away from the pattern and do a few circles before I felt calm enough to go back and land.
I had less than 10 hours and to this day I have no idea what gave me the presence of mind to do the proper thing. My instructor was always bored and generally pretty awful, so I knew nothing at that point. I mean, less than most people who have only one or two hours solo.

Any landing that you can walk away from is a good landing. If you can use the airplane again it’s a great landing! My dad was in the chAir Force, flew F86 in Korea, shot down 4 MiGs and was a trainer with the T6 for a few years. Made sure I got my privates and showed me a few tricks. Looks like a good landing to me!

If it was a go-around, it isn't landing. Hence, it isn't the worst landing

The winds in Lanzarote can be very gusty and very strong.

Reminds me of when I did this in a 172. The porpoising got worse and I finally hit the power with back pressure maintained and flew out of it.

At first ground effect was the culprit then followed by pilot induced oscillation im just glad no drama unfold

His responses were indication of he was hoping the aircraft landing him rather that him commanding the aircraft. Most pilots struggle with crosswind due to lack of currency or infrequency.
