In August of 1997 Rare released Goldeneye 007 for the Nintendo 64 and with it came a paradigm shift of what most thought a first-person shooter on a console could be. Based on the 1995 James Bond film of the same name, today Goldeneye is revered for it it’s enemy A.I., level design, gameplay, and of course, its legendary multiplayer. This is the story behind the making of Goldeneye, a Nintendo 64 masterpiece.

Big thanks to Graslu00 for providing the correction below. He's got a great GoldenEye centric channel you can check out at YouTube.Com/Graslu00/

The correction: The reason GoldenEye XBLA didn't release wasn't because of Nintendo, but due to Rare / Microsoft having no licensing to work on the Bond franchise. That, and because GoldenEye 64 doesn't follow the new guidelines imposed by MGM after its release and success back in 97.

TL;DR: Even if it was an issue with Nintendo and they shorted it out, they wouldn't get too far as MGM would not agree to remaking the game the same way it was.

My three friends and I had my friend’s house to ourselves while his parents were gone. It was storming, pouring down rain and we walked to the pizza place down the street, bought a pizza with the change we scraped together, ran back before the water soaked through the box and played goldeneye for hours. Best day ever.

My dad played this game a lot, even after 20+ years he would still play. He died last year tragically but Goldeneye still remains in the N64 as it was the last one he played.

I played this so much as a 90s kid, but didn't see the movie until I was an adult. The whole time during the film I was saying, "it's just like the game!"

Us kids that grew up in 90s were the luckiest kids alive. This game is nostalgia at its finest. Still holds up to this day.

I genuinely think that when people say “goldeneye” a majority of people will think of the game before the movie

As a bachelor in his 20s, the minute I learned about Goldeneye I went to the store and bought an N64, four controllers, four rumble packs and this game.
Goldeneye multiplayer became the new reason to gather and drink. 10 to 15 people hanging out on a Saturday night waiting for a turn on 1/4 of 32 inch crt tv. Good times.

When i was in college in the late 90's, i was a stage manager for the 1200 seat student union theater, which happened to have a 40-foot wide screen with a digital projector in the booth. I was trusted with my own set of keys to the facility. So me and some friends went in after midnight and played Goldeneye till dawn, multi-player of course. By far the most memorable experience playing this game.

I actually played this game with my brothers so much, that I had actually memorized the screams the enemies would make when shot in sequence. I just had way way way too much fun with this game. One of the best ever.

Back when you and three friends would all sleep over and spend the entire night eating pizza and sodas while playing this.

It was about 24 years ago when my friends invited me over to play it. I only saw them when I visited my dad, so I was always conflicted morally about spending time playing goldeneye in their basement or being with my dad. We would put a blanket down the center of the screen and attach it to the ceiling tile, so we couldn’t see the other teams screen. The frantic anxiety of proximity mines in the complex often yielded loud cussing and slamming of the controllers. It was addicting, nerve wracking and fun all at the same time.

I put in so many hours on this game as a kid. I literally played this game for years. One of the best games of all time.

My brother, friends and I would split the screen in half with cardboard, and one of us would sit on the floor so we could not see the other screen. Absolute classic, thanks for sharing.

GoldenEye seriously was a HUGE leap in FPS games, I remember wasting away my sleepless nights playing it.
This game is like the McLaren F1 or the F40 of video games. Iconic.

So basically, Goldeneye was amazing because they were given the freedom to take risk and think outside the box and do the unorthodox, things many AAA games nowadays don't do anymore because it's all about money. Amazing that a team that never made a video game before have us one of the best of all time. Fantastic video.

I feel lucky to have been a teen in the 90s. I had the chance to discover Goldeneye64 and Half-Life. 🥰
