I’ve never flown Etihad or any foreign carrier but I will say I love Etihad’s livery. The gold, silver, and bronze geometric patterns look so amazing on their planes, particularly the A380.

Also they had a massive competitive advantage on their rivals. Abu Dhabi international airport has US passport control which mean that Etihad flights land as domestic flights in the US. Anybody who’s had to stand in line at US passport control knows how a massive advantage this is.

Etihad became too greedy. Just like JAL back in the days. Rather then investing in hotels and other companies, JAL should have focused on running their own airline.
