Will A $50 Sub-Zero Sleeping Bag Keep You Alive?
The Browning Endeavor sleeping bag is rated for -20° but it only costs $50 so, will it actually help you survive sub-zero temperatures? Let's find out...

If you live in a cold environment, it's important to be able to withstand a power outage or even a vehicle breakdown when there is suddenly no access to heat. And although having alternate heat sources are an important part of preparedness, depending on the emergency, you might not be able to have a wood burning stove or propane heating unit. However, for $50, you could have at the very least, a sleeping bag that is rated for negative temperatures. But would it actually do the job? In the video, I used an infrared thermometer to try and demonstrate the temperature change from inside of the bag and on the outside surface. And I only spent an hour outside as it was very cold and I was not using any shelter which you would obviously be using in conjunction with the bag. Either way, this was a non-scientific test to give you some insight regarding what a $50 -20° sleeping bag can do.

Consider leaving your mouth and nostrils exposed in cold weather. It’s tempting to cover your face entirely, but you might wake to a cold and wet bag from the moisture of your breath, and drying a bag in cold weather may not be easy, depending on the situation. Bag temperature ratings vary wildly. Some are more official than others, and some companies outright lie. Survival rating is not the same as comfort rating. Thanks for doing this, Magic! 😊

Watching this I imagined a neighbor couple looking at your deck through a telescope lol. Honey, I'm telling you he's been laying on the deck for almost an hour in a sleeping bag. What? That's just insane! Who would be outside in a sleeping bag in this weather. I'm telling ya; he's taking a nap on the deck right now. Lmao

The military taught me to, never use a sleeping bag without a bivy bag. Keeps you warm and dry, plus it is much easier to clean than a sleeping bag. In the field PJ's are No-Go.

Nice bag. Couple that with a pad and tent (or other shelter), you'd push that comfort level right up. I'm strongly considering this for as stated a car bag. Nice review. Thanks.

I got a Marmot 0°, extra long mummy bag, for a great deal during the year end closeouts a 8 years ago. It's been to Iceland 6x since then, and has never failed to keep me warm.

You can use a flannel sleeping bag liner which will bring you more warmth and it will help keep the bag itself cleaner and dryer. Silk also makes a good liner and it will wick perspiration away from you as you sleep.

A lot of the times the rating means it will keep you alive at that temp, regardless of comfort level. Looks like an incredible deal!!

I got a -40 rated sleeping bag on clearance a few years back. It was regularly $450. It was missing the bag for storing it so I got it for $100. I’ve slept in -35 c in Canada’s Yukon and it was very warm. It’s a large bag but I love it.

A silk liner (like people buy for travel when sleeping in hotel beds) are pretty cheap but make a huge difference with keeping you warm. Probably an additional 15-20 degree rating in my opinion.

Tested all of my gear the last cold spell we had, even got lucky with wind taking it to 0, bag rated to -40 for $75 (Teton on Amazon). Foxelli boots also worked great.

Throw a good heavy wool blanket over that thing and you’re going to go! Thank you, Magic, for enduring the temps to help us with preps!

Thank you! I've been looking at sub zero bags for months not really knowing much about them or trusting Amazon reviews. The reviews on midway are great for these. 4 on the way

For the price it is definitely worth the money. I do go winter camping quite a bit and have a few different bags and the two I have that are rated to -20 and -10 cost about $350-400. Now they are a lot different and made for hiking but for $50 something to have for just in case you can't go wrong.

I've only ever bought The North Face bags for backpacking. They use to make a model called The Inferno that was forty below used for high altitude climbing.

I have a Browning sleeping bag. Very heavy but use when I go hunting in a cabin. That thing is very comfortable and super warm. Had it for 12 years too and zero problems.

You should also conduct a test laying directly on the snow. Just in case you get stranded, and you’re not with a vehicle.
